The Gloster Gladiator was the last biplane fighter to see service with the RAF, and entered service a few years before the outbreak of the Second World War. Despite already being considered outdated in comparison to the monoplane fighters of the era, it would see use during the conflict in both land and naval variants, being able to defend the skies until more modern aircraft could replace it.
Join me on the workbench in this video as I finally complete my model of the Airfix Gloster Gladiator Mk.I (A02052) in 1/72 scale. This plastic kit had been in my stash for about a decade, as the rigging seemed quite intimidating and I was trying to avoid it . . .
In this build and review I explore what this first release of the kit from 2013 was like, focusing on how the model is to build, my successes and failures with the painting stages, and rounding off with a summary of the project at the end.
For a closer look inside the box of this kit, with a more detailed exploration of the plastic parts, decals, paint schemes and instructions, check out the dedicated unboxing video here: Glorious Gladiator! Unboxing the 1/72 Scal...

#Airfix #Gladiator #modelkit #scalemodel #modelplane #plasticmodel
The original blue plastic Airfix Gladiator was my first-ever plastic kit, somewhere in the mid-1950s. My dad helped me build it, but as he had compromised dexterity in his left arm as a result of wounds suffered at the battle of El Alamein, we couldn't attach the top wing, I said: never mind, dad, it can be one of those American planes - because, I guess, of its radial engine.
At El Alamein, his arm was cut in half by shrapnel from a German bomb and his future as a champion boxer and as a top-level rugby union and rugby league player was over.
In Egypt, he was given a surprisingly effective makeshift repair to his arm in a hospital in Cairo. Though the wound wept pus for the rest of his life, he never accepted any special treatment and learned to drive and switched his trade from cabinetmaker to french polisher.
He was resilient and never blamed the Germans for his life-changing injuries. He felt they were just young men like him thrust into an endeavour that was beyond anything they had expected.
The temporary arm re-attachment became permanent and was with him until he died 30-odd years after he was wounded. So, the Airfix Gladiator - the old and the new mould versions - has a special place in my modelling history and memory. Thanks for the great build and reviving those memories of trying to build the Gladiator with my dad 70 years ago. Mike from New Zealand.
