Harold Wilson was widely considered devious when he was PM. And yet how straightforward he is is this interview. He doesn't evade a single question, does he? Admirably calm and articulate, as well. Dimbleby is rather needling here.
What is going on here? He is actually answering Davids questions?! He's not acting as if some invisible interviewer is asking different questions that only he can hear. Like Teresa May does in ALL of her interviews.
Harold Wilson wasn't a thoroughbred Socialist he was a Liberal Socialist and his leadership kept the Labour Party from fragmenting. He was a man who saw poverty and recognised aspiration and was a far better Prime Minister than was given credit for. He hated the neoliberalism that was spreading through the Tory Party and he put Thatcher in her place during PMQs. Had he won the 1970 General Election his best years would have been ahead of him instead of behind him but by 1976 he thought he was swimming against a tide both within his Party and the country. Losing Harold Wilson left Britain wide open to the 'casino banking' ideology of Thatcher and her cohorts and then in turn: Major, Blair, and Brown. Our manufacturing dropped to an all time low as our wealth began to be generated in the City of London and now look at the mess we're in after the great recession caused by the bankers. As for him closing more mines than Thatcher, check the real truth, Wilson wanted the Coal Industry to be our number one fuel provider while Thatcher wanted to crush the mining unions at any cost.
Overall a good prime minister. a) kept us out of the Vietnam War, b) the Open University started under his leadership, c) he was an impersonator's gold mine, d) he opposed Ian Smith of Rhodesia and e) he would use the technique of lighting his pipe to give him time to think of a good answer to difficult questions that other interviewers threw at him. Most of the older generation that I knew did not like him because he was not Sir Winston Churchill.
When this election took place I was just nine days old. Katie Derham was actually born on Election Day itself! What I know about this period is second hand, for obvious reasons.
