Yo, I agree with you Characters that are overpowered for no reason that don't have any reason to be overpowered sucks hard. Like you can add some story for them to be overpowered. It can't be that they can just beat everyone and no one can beat them.

weather report baited me into this video idk what im getting into

ok i have to disagree with the last thing because 80% of critiques on this type of stuff is just unwarrented, specially since a lot of ocs are made for fun and for personal joy, i dont really like this mindset that you gotta acomodate to other people expectations when it comes to art made for me as the creator

its just so funny to hear you critiquing Araki's character designs for being outlandish and busy when thats almost the entire point of his art. it's like complaining that war-time photographers have too much violent subject matter in their art, or that pin-up artists could cover up more skin in their art lol

can't honestly compare Araki to anything else, much less Honkai lolll he's just a crackhead and i love him for that

I appreciate diversity but sometimes you can just tell when it's being done performative vs. thoughtfully. Thoughtful representation acknowledges the diverse culture and experiences of an individual character. Performative is just tokenism for brownie points.

as someone with a lot of ocs in canon, id like to share my thoughts !!

i honestly do it for it for the love of the series. the only reason why im able to do so much us because the established world of the game is wide, diverse, and pretty interesting for me, and i like making characters that can expand and amplify those ideas. theres a lot of elements about politics, economic inequality, effects of war, corruption, whatever…which probably doesnt speak a lot for a whole lot of other kinds series so maybe this is a little different ?? (fe3h for context)

either way, making characters for a game i already love so much is a whole lot of fun, and its has the bonus of them being able to interact with my own favorite characters <3 i could be capable of making my own original stuff, but i honestly like what im doing already and will let these sillies frolic in this “small” fandom circle

I like the innocent boy trope when done well, because often you have three options when making an innocent boy:
1) they realize some of their methods are inefficient and straight up dangerous for themselves and develop from that after risking big in some situations
2) you can make it a tragedy on how them wanting to believe everyone has some good in them and giving the benefit of the doubt to some shady individuals ends up baking their dismay
3) you give them plot armor(not recommended but happens a lot for some reason)

“Make your own series”
Srry gng but I don’t have the brain capacity for that 🥹 I say with my Google doc filled up with scripts, character info, etc.

i kind of agree with a lot of things you said, except for the last one; the whole point of ocs in canon is to make an interesting character that builds off and interacts with the already existing setting and characters of the original story, and also to show appreciation and interest towards the series/game/etc, that's the way i do it anyways

Tanjiro’s whole thing isn’t about redeeming the demons. It’s more so, helping them remembering that they were once human.
But when it comes down to life or death he will definitely kill them.

Honestly disagree w the last one cuz half of the time 'critique' is just personal taste
Not to mention that most artists do not want to make money off thier art and r just chillin

4:10 I honestly don't think Josuke is overpowered, he BARELY defeated Kira if it wasn't for the ambulance there was a good chance he would have lost

Simple character designs depends because sometimes they just need one defining feature to make them look distinguishable

Also popularity can effect it too, like you mentioned Shinji but i genuinely havent watched the show and i didnt recognise his suit at all, but i know its Shinji because of the style and the smaller traits of the character

Also , makes things easy to animate

So this is why ill defend simple designs pretty strongly because they can be done super well

I got whiplash from hearing the english localised names for weather report and anasui, while using the original name for oingo & boingo😰😰

Why is the 'port in the thumbnail 😭

While I do agree with some of these, I do miss the day where young artists (because many of these issues just sound like “young artists just copying what they saw and not realizing it’s bad/overdone until they grow”) could just be cringe and edgy in peace. Lord knows what I was thinking in my deviantart days.

I think you mean basic? Rather than simple, a basic character design is not fun to look at, there’s no unique character trait and that’s what makes them boring.

Tanjiro doesn't try redeeming the demons, he just learns which ones deserve painless executions (The Demon Spider Mom) and those who don't (The Arm Demon). God forbid someone have empathy for a human turned into a man eating monster probably against their will while not letting it get in the way of their job

eh, I mean, not everyone WANTS to make money off of their art, and they're just making and posting it for fun. In that case, I feel like it's totally valid to not want critique for it. And even if they do want to improve, they can do that on their own terms without people giving unsolicited criticism. Like, I started from the same place as everyone; I never received unsolicited critique and yet I still improved because I wanted to improve, so I worked for it. If someone wants to improve their art, they can do it on their own, or ask for help if they're stuck. They don't need random strangers on the internet telling them what to do.
Now, when someone asks for critique and responds poorly when they get it, on the other hand, that is a different story.

I find it funny that you dislike both simple designs and over designed characters when most of my OCs are literally just like that. Either really simple or really exaggerated
