I feel bad for the first artist. TikTok has gotten really hostile towards art recently, and it’s not the artists’ fault, the people are just pretty much applying beauty standards to drawings

i think many people online confuse “bad art” with “art that’s personally not my cup of tea”. like sometimes the art isn’t bad, it’s probably just not your preferred style. and that’s fine! but it becomes an issue when you treat your opinion as objective fact

I think the reddit comments were WAYYY too harsh on that last one... The big problem I saw was the lighting, everything else mentioned felt super nitpicky. If that drawing was in a comic book, people would eat it up.

As someone who used to post my cringe art back at deviantart in 2015,   I've never seen people being that mean to other artists  until now on tiktok wtf

imo the main problem with all of this is the fact that lots of people camouflage blatant hate as constructive criticism. that makes beginner artists scared of any negative feedback and they become insecure and defensive in advance, which is preventing them from progressing. everyone needs genuine critique to grow. the biggest hurdle is learning to distinguishing between what's ment as actual advice and what isn't.

remember, making art is a skill - you have to practice it to get better. plus, everyone has their own tempo when it comes to the learning speed and progression - stop comparing yourselves to other artists, it's making you miserable. artworks should inspire you, not bring you down.

and, of course, art is subjective. trying to please every single person that doesn't like your artstyle is an impossible task. just do what you want to do and focus on your own artistic journey. letting random haters on the internet shape your self worth as an artist (and in general) is sad af and it will never bring you fulfilment.

tldr: hate ≠ constructive criticism, keep practicing whatever you need to practice and do what brings you joy 🗿

It's not "bad" art. It's a lack of the basic fundamentals. Doesn't matter how much stylization a person has, without learning fundamentals it will always look off. Even the most successful stylized artists have a strong or at least a basic understanding of the fundamentals.

That person with the creepy art should keep up that part honestly. To me it seems like they clearly enjoy scarier or at least non-cutsie art. It might be a clash with some subjects not meant to be scary (not that that's a bad thing either btw), but otherwise I think they got something there.

It's literally just a lack of fundamentals. I mean actual fundamentals like perspective, form, value, and composition. If you don't know these things, regardless of your style or interest, your art will take longer to make.

All of these people are also either young or beginner artists(or both) and they're so adverse to actually learning regardless of outside influence that they're stunting themselves. You don't have to learn realism to practice but you DO have to practice if you want to get better.

Also the fact that many of these people are hobbyists and don't actually have the discipline/motivation to truly sit down and learn what it is they want to draw. Drawing is a skill that you have to constantly practice if you want to remain consistent let alone improve. There is no end goal in art like with learning to build a car, it is a never ending journey.

Draw because you like it and because it's something that you enjoy. Anything more and you're going to burn yourself out and ruin a healthy outlet for yourself.

Art culture has been like this for so long and I feel so bad for new artists because their greatest critics are cynical 20-somethings and teenagers who have no idea what a style is lol

People need to stop worrying about consistency in their art. The moment their art style is "consistent" it's a huge sign that you've started to plateau and aren't trying as many new things. I'm not saying you should intentionally make every piece look completely different than the last, but it's really not that big of a concern. Employers and schools look for people with strong technical knowledge to the point they can adapt their art to fit any style. Artists who get famous for their styles typically have to go through years of copying other people's style to get to the point their work is recognized.

1. This is a phenomenon I see so frequently. It's something I mentally dub "Tumblr face syndrome." Not because of any derogatory reason, but just because I see this happen on Tumblr over any other platform. I'd like to note that a lot of people dub this Tumblr style for other reasons, particularly for "exaggerating" noses. I don't think any artist who draws like this is actively exaggerating the noses. While noses get omitted in a lot of anime style art, there's nothing wrong with leaving them or even drawing bigger and less conventionally attractive noses. The issue is when they're way more detailed than the rest of the face. 0:25 is the worst example. I believe this phenomenon is caused by rendering individual features first, particularly the nose, lips and jaw, and then adding anime eyes or whatever on top. The faces are insanely detailed, meanwhile their eyes, which are the most important parts of portraits, are left under-rendered comparatively. Bad perspective and strange proportions amplifies this effect tenfold. This really isn't that bad. I've done it before, you've done it, we've all done it.
It's important to know that just rendering the eyes more won't fix the problem. The only way to fix this is to zoom out on your canvas and focus on blocking out shadows first. The study done at 0:37 is a good start, but rather than trying to copy the directions of eyebrows and eyes, try to copy how the light hits the subject instead.
2. You can tell which used a reference and which didn't. It's night and day. While yes, the eyes are too big in most cases, the core of it is form. The three-quarter views at 3:09 completely fall apart. Practicing drawing the head as a cube or flat plane at different angles and then carving out the features is the next step. Use references for your practice work here. Take a picture and try to represent the person as a bunch of cubes. I love the way this artist draws eyes, they're very pretty.
3. There's definitely improvement so it makes it difficult to say anything. However, definitely not 4 years worth of it. I'd really need to know more about this person's drawing process and see their other work to give more advice on what to do. While the average "practice more" advice is still applicable, I don't find it as relevant seeing how this person went 4 years with very little improvement. I think there's another obstacle in the way making this much more complicated.
4. There's really nothing inconsistent about this. There's nothing wrong with being inconsistent either. I would like to know why this artist thinks this.
5. Also not going to criticize this one, social media values the art equivalent of brainrot so unless you're posting some trendy slop 24/7, don't expect traction. You'd be surprised how many of us are under 100 followers. In fact, look up your favorite game, find an artist who worked on it and their social media. Unless it's a huge game, they're going to have very little followers even if they're highly successful and capable artists.
6. I'm just gonna skip this one I have nothing valuable to say about anime neck.
7. I was definitely in this boat at one point but practicing linework made line-art fun and less tedious. A lot of artists think clean linework just means tracing the sketch. It's so much more than that. In comic book making, there's what's called a penciler who does the pencil drawing and the inker who does the linework. Reading books and watching videos on the process really opens your eyes to the real magic of what inkers do. I also recommend getting and trying out a dip pen/G pen. There are cheap ones including a nib for like $20 on Amazon, you don't need to break the bank. They're really frustrating to use at first but they really force you to be thoughtful with your linework.
8. You can just start with the tools you have. Also, I don't agree with the comments, there are lots of Manga that are incredibly detailed. Beserk, the works of Junji Ito, Baki are all insanely detailed and realistic. There's no obligation to continue the manga if you're just making it for yourself. If you worked for a manga publishing firm, that's a different story, but this person clearly isn't. This person just seems very insecure over their abilities and just needs to be told that they're allowed to draw, lol.
9. Again, another where I disagree with the comments. I think they're both good but are fundamentally different artworks. The hair is NOT a downgrade. It looks so much more dynamic and full of movement. If I had to pinpoint the "spark" this artist is taking about, it's probably entirely the lighting. The new drawing has amazing lighting, it's rich and vibrant, but the old one has highlights that pop. The linework is dynamic and you can see it in the bright highlights, meanwhile they're muddied in the darker lighting. That doesn't mean the dynamic lineart isn't there, it absolutely is, but your eye isn't drawn to it in the same way.

I really do wish all beginner artists learn that the best way to improve is time, practice, and studying fundamentals. Critiques can be very helpful, but I've found that I can only accept criticism when it's 100% respectful. Not all critiques are helpful, some crits are downright bullying, and asking random strangers online is opening oneself up to that. I would recommend beginner artists look for critiques from Art Teachers, Professors, Artist Friends, Local Artists, etc.

I was looking at the title and was thinking, "Who are they down bad for???"

8:24 😭 they embossed their qr code making it unusable. defeats the point of adding it as a watermark

People on reddit can be so harsh and arrogant

2:04 this comment already pmo and i barely started watching bruh. people make goofy looking faces all the time, every single possible facial expression a person could have will inevitably look ridiculous one way or another except being entirely neutral faced. you can tell when somebody doesn't actually have anybody who spends time with them irl outside of maybe a formal setting because if these commenters did have people to laugh and cry and hang out with then they'd understand how faces work and how they contort naturally. people should pause videos of folks talking more often to actually gain perspective on how humans, yknow, LOOK ??? omfg

17:11 I think just making the background black on the new and improved one would take it up a thousand levels because then the face would actually be the focal point and the details and shading would stand out

Not gonna lie, the one talking about the messy vs clean line-art, it took me a second to realize which one the messy one was 😅. I think it’s because the “messy” one FEELS more natural and dynamic, so while it’s not technically “clean,” it feels more like a complete drawing. The “clean” style doesn’t have as much life in it, and you can tell the artist wasn’t having fun with it. I think we put too much pressure on artists to make things look as clean as possible, but it’s not as necessary as people might think!

And for the last one, the stylization of the first drawing is very interesting, but it also has more contrast than the redraw. It draws the eye in more, especially to her face thanks her her eyes having a shadow over them. It also gives her more of a tough badass feel, whereas she looks a bit more soft in the redraw and doesn’t have as much personality. Both are good in different ways, but the first is more immediately eye catching

This is the first video I've seen of you and I'm really impressed. You actually do take the time to give out proper constructive criticism to artists in a coherent manner.

Reddit snobs are sooo bitter and bored
