ATTENTION: They are closing the Museum of Science in Philadelphia. With one months notice. No public outreach, no search for funding. We need as many science communicators talking about this and fast.

Just heard about it from MiniMinuteMans video on this subject.

I was trained as an actor and singer. Resonance is emphasized. I had virtually no "head" resonance ... later I discovered I was born with no Frontal sinuses... which would support the theory of sinuses serving as resonant chambers - as would my ethmoidectomy, basically making that area a big open chamber, leaving me with head resonance I could have only dreamed of. In fact, my son thought my voice was more "nasally," but in reality, it was just more normal. So, yeah, spaces in your head can act as resonant chambers - I now do audio engineering, thus "resonant chamber" being in my vocabulary...

Gross sinus story. Had a mild sinus infection. I blew my nose and had a rubber-band-like booger hanging out. so I grabbed it with a tissue and pulled. I could feel it move right up the bridge of my nose and up above my eye. A gross gummy worm like thing came out. And then my sinuses drained and I felt great in a day.

I mean, I'm never saying "My kidneys feel great today" either, and they certainly aren't vestigial.

The real question is why we kept the appendix, when we've already lost our bibliography..

I had sinus surgery to have pollups removed. Now I rinse my sinuses every day when I brush my teeth. The surgery was painfull but so glad I did it. After the splints were removed and I got rinsed out, I walked around for a month telling everyone what it was like to breath. I felt like I had a whole new life. I didn't know what normal was.

i can attest that, as someone missing the upper sinuses, one thing that it does impact is pressurizing in water. i can't dive more than four feet under water without starting to get pressure-pain and it's likely because my head can't pressurize properly. the only reason i know i don't have the sinuses is because when i was getting my wisdom teeth out, the took an x-ray and the doctor was fascinated. no scuba diving for me!

Once I had a heavy cold that painfully blocked my sinuses. A cousin suggested that I snort a line of cayenne pepper. With the pain I was so desperate for really, I did it. it was a shock to the nostrils, but man, my sinuses completely drained. I had relief for about an hour or two, but I did not repeat the process. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Doctor Mike gets around. First Legal Eagle, now Joe.

Surely there's a Tom Scott/Dr Mike crossover in the works?

My girlfriend and I had a really bad congestive cold for a few days. During the worst of it, I was crying really hard about something and my nose started to run. When I blew it out, the thickest, brownest pile of mucus filled up the whole napkin. It was a lake of snot. But the pressure that had built so much in the center of my brow was all gone!

I just got my first sinus infection that I can remember in 40 years, and this video pops up.

My husband has had such severe sinus infections that he's been hospitalized--twice. The first time, they were baffled at how sick he was and did a CT scan of his head. The results included the statement that he had "complete opacification of the sinus cavities." So now in our house we measure our congestion in terms of estimated opacification levels.

Also, while he was in the hospital, I read a biography of Mary Queen of Scots. Her first husband, Francis II of France, died of an ear infection that got out of control and destroyed a quarter of his brain. (Or a third? It's been awhile.) I guess any infection in your head can travel in terrifying ways.

I am a classical singer, and experience tells me that people with bigger heads (see Jon Vickers & Joan Sutherland) have louder voices (health and singing technique being equal). The mass of bone is much more relevant to vocal resonance than any holes in the bone.

When she made that sound through the dinosaur skull my dog's head popped up haha

You need to keep in mind that the brain isn't the only organ in your skull. Your eyes actually benefit from the existence of healthy sinuses, especially if you've been in a fight or have been otherwise injured. Having somewhere for inflamed tissue to expand into to prevent damage to both your eyes and brain is fairly beneficial.

As a music educator - I’d like to chime in on the sinuses thing

When we teach singing with a full healthy balanced sound, with maximum resonance, we tend to tell students to open up in the nasal cavity - including the frontal sinus behind the eyebrows,
Raising your eyebrows will also raise your soft pallet and open up the nasal cavity even more

Professional singers know how to allow their nasal cavity to help them resonate and it can help expand one’s range and allow one to sing for longer because you can use less force and let your body resonate

But I think most of the resonance is coming from the chest, so it may be possible that singing can be done without them

Sinus story, my housemate has a big dog, he’s now medicated (dog not housemate!), but before that he was unpredictable. I have 4 cats. My favourite (shush don’t tell the others!) Jago actually seemed to get on well with the dog, until one day while walking into the living room together, the dog snapped & bit Jago on the head. Jago ran off, I couldn’t catch him to get him to the vet until the following day. The dog had pierced through his sinus on the right side. It luckily didn’t cause too much damage, but that’s just luck really. Jago was very sniffly for a couple of days, but absolutely fine after that. He now has a badass triangular scar on his nose. It has taken time (it’s now a year later) but he is comfortable with the dog again, not like before, but ok.
My thinking is that if the sinus wasn’t there the dog could easily have killed him, pierced through to the brain. So yay for sinuses!!
