In this episode, for the first time, a guest came to us with a real axe. And here's why. Imagine: in just 50 years, almost all the major civilizations of the Mediterranean and Middle East collapsed. The Hittite Empire disappeared without a trace. Mycenaean Greece was reduced to ruins. Egypt barely survived, losing half its territory. Entire cities were abandoned, trade routes were severed, and writing was forgotten for centuries. It's called the Bronze Age Catastrophe—one of the most mysterious collapses in human history. And the strangest thing is: we still don't know exactly what happened. Climate? Earthquakes? An invasion of the "Sea Peoples"? Or all three?
Today's episode is about the Bronze Age—the era of the first globalization and its dramatic end. We discussed with archaeologist Ivan Semyan, PhD, chief researcher at the Laboratory of Experimental Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and a project fellow at New York University in Abu Dhabi, who crafts antiquities himself and brews beer using a 4,000-year-old recipe, how the first global economy emerged during that era. The Amber Road connected the Baltic with the Mediterranean, tin was transported from Britain to Mesopotamia, and copper ingots are found thousands of kilometers from their mining sites. This was true globalization—3,000 years BC!
And, of course, I was also interested in: what was in the Bronze Age consumer basket? What was on the table instead of the latest iPhone, and what did people do in the evening instead of watching TV series? How did they even come up with the idea of mixing copper and tin to make bronze? And what makes all these metals unique? What is the Land of Cities in the Urals, and is it true that there was an observatory in Arkaim? And we'll also honor the oldest people in history (reviews on cuneiform Avito))
