In a small town on the Don River, peasants have been digging up enormous bones for centuries. They explained it simply: a beast called Indrik lives underground – invisible while alive, and when it dies, the bones emerge. The phenomenon was so widespread that rumors reached Peter the Great. The Tsar disliked the mysticism and offered his own explanation: the bones of Alexander the Great's elephants. Interestingly, he almost got it right – they really are related to elephants. Only mammoths. And the people who lived here 40,000 years ago hunted them. The place was named Kostenki. Today, it's a mega-monument to the global Paleolithic: dozens of sites on a single riverbank, each with its own cultural layer and mysteries.

Today, our guest is Ksenia Stepanova, an archaeologist. We discussed what our ancestors put on the table instead of smartphones. Can scratches on flint reveal what they ate for breakfast 40,000 years ago? Did ancient people have lighters – or were they waiting for lightning to strike? Why did Neanderthals make elbow-sized stone axes, clearly useless for hunting? Why are their drawings undecipherable? When exactly did the dog become man's best friend? And what will future archaeologists think of us when they excavate our landfills?
