PART 2 HERE: Toni-Ann Byfield: The Hunt for "Cane" – wi...
In the early hours of September 14, 2003, seven-year-old Toni-Ann Byfield was shot in the back in a cramped North London bedsit. She was "collateral damage" in a violent drug war—an innocent child who witnessed the murder of the man she called her father, Bertram "Blacker" Byfield.
In this exclusive two-part special of True Criminals, we are joined by Neil Basu QPM, the former Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) who led Operation Trident’s hunt for the killer.
In Part 1, Neil reveals:
The high-stakes pressure of investigating a "Category A" murder in the wake of the Macpherson Report.
The "broken cigarette" lead that nearly derailed the entire investigation.
The gut-wrenching reality of dealing with grieving families while balancing 16 other homicide cases.
The shocking moment a national TV appeal turned the tide of the case.
Neil Basu is one of the most distinguished detectives in British history. Having served as the Head of UK Counter-Terrorism, he retired as the highest-ranking officer of color in the UK. He is a specialist in organized crime, gang violence, and national security.
Read Neil’s Memoir: Turmoil: 30 Years of Policing, Politics and Prejudice – A searingly honest look at his career and the Toni-Anne Byfield case.
