There are signs in the eyes that don't hurt, don't bother you, and that almost no one checks. This 54-year-old woman arrived at the intensive care unit with a hypertensive emergency and no prior history to explain it. She didn't smoke, she didn't drink, she wasn't obese. When we pieced together her history, it turned out that her body had been warning her for at least three years, and it was doing so in the only place she looked at herself every day: her bathroom mirror.
In this video, you'll understand why the eyes are the only part of the body where you can see inside the plumbing that carries your blood, without cutting anything and without complicated tests. You'll learn to distinguish four signs that you can look for at home, in natural light and without filters: when the whites of the eyes turn yellow, when a painless blood spot appears, when bags appear under the eyelids, and what you see when you pull down your lower eyelid. You'll know which ones warrant a calm appointment and which ones can't wait.
As an intensive care physician, many of my patients arrive alone, without a medical history and with no one to explain what's been happening. In those first few minutes, the body is the only thing that speaks, and the eyes are among the first things I check, before any lab tests. What I'm showing you here is exactly that, applied to your mirror, your blood pressure, and your routine this week.
