Why don’t I make videos about albums, bands or artists I dislike?
It is a question I am asked surprisingly often. Negative opinions can attract views, encourage disagreement and generate plenty of heated comments—but that has never been what Now Spinning Magazine is about.
I want to make it clear from the beginning that I have nothing against anyone who creates that kind of content. Some of the music channels I enjoy and respect sometimes take a very different approach from mine. We can disagree about an album and still be friends, because ultimately we are all united by our love of music.
In this video, I explain why I choose to spend my time talking about the music I love, while also making it clear that I have nothing against other creators who take a different approach. We don’t have to agree about an album to respect each other or remain friends.
I also share the story of requesting “Burn” by Deep Purple in a Birmingham pub, only to discover that everyone around me thought my favourite song was dreadful! It was a lasting reminder that one person’s masterpiece may mean absolutely nothing to somebody else—and that someone else’s unfashionable album could be the soundtrack to the most important moment of their life.
Now Spinning Magazine was created around the idea of friends sitting together at a pub table and talking about music. That remains at the heart of everything I do: music, community and friendship.
There is enough darkness and division in the world. If Now Spinning Magazine can offer a little enthusiasm, kindness and light, then I think that is something worth protecting.
Please let me know what you think. Can we disagree about music while remaining kind and respectful?
