I grew up in Derbyshire and I watched this because of the Glapwell Pit mention. It's really sad that there's nothing left of what was a hive of activity there years ago. My dad worked at Glapwell pit from the 1930s when he'd be a teenager until the 70s and I recall going past the entrance as a kid, probably on the way to Chesterfield, and being fascinated buy it all. I still have my dad's brass pit tag on my key ring today, number 299, it's precious to me.
You mentioned the small railway stations ... well there used to be lots of them around the country years ago encompassing small villages, but the Beeching cuts of the 60s did away with most of them, sadly, but they were needed in their day. I had relatives in Tibshelf and I vividly remember the station there and once having a trip to Cleethorpes for the day from there. Thanks for the video and for your enthusiasm for things past.

Another great video thanks my wife’s grandparents lived at the bottom of Sutton Hall Road in Carr Vale, had some great times there at Christmas. Open fire roaring away it was lovely and cosy 😊

That was a good trek, well researched history and well presented with some interesting remains; particularly liked the photo of the loco on it's side at Ramscroft............

When we were kids we used to play down in the  ‘clayhole’ where the old Byron brickworks was located.  It was a massive hole in the ground, fifty to a hundred feet deep (enormous for a child) with the old kilns still there.
It became a landfill for all the local rubbish.
I’ve walked the route you took many, many times over the years.

It’s a much more beautiful place now.

You are quite correct Gareth, pride in construction has totally gone. Breeze block houses, any old metal bridges thrown up without that wow factor. Britain used to be the place to come for enjoying historic places and buildings, but they just blow it all up and landscape for more breeze block houses. And sitting in front of a roaring fire in winter was something we enjoyed, but is now consigned to distant memory. A good stomp though, as usual. thank you.

The Twin Oaks Motel at J29 is made up of the colliery cottages from Ramcroft. Just south of there at the end of the old Mansfield Road you had Doe Lea Colliery (or Dominic's Drift, opened ~1930, closed 1994).

Also, the large boarded up house overlooking the junction was once home to one the 80s comedy dance troupe The Roly-Polies, apparently. Bought by HS2 when that was going to be a thing round these parts.

Another cracking little video dude. Lord Byron family owned all that land i believe hence the brick works name. Even a pub in Bolsover called The Byron Tap now. My dad worked at Bolsover Colliery.

Brilliant vid, thanks! I lived in this area for about two decades. Like you I loved walking and exploreing the area. But thank gods the industry that went on in the area has gone, no matter what the old miners say! For example, the River Doe Lea was the most polluted river in Europe back in the day, and my Graddad was killed in a pit in Derbyshire. Are you still down there, and if so, then I recommend that you take a walk down Pleasely Vale.  Stone Age settlements, Limestone crags, textile mills and workers' cottages. I used to live at 7 Bottom Row.

The road bridge over the track by Palterton and Sutton station was removed in 1995, and for once, I actually walked that line back when the bridge was in situ and ballast a plenty (early 90's probably). My Grandad worked at Byron bricks and squashed his thumb in a machine there, so couldn't bend it 😮 I guess that station served both villages either side but still a bit of a trek by foot. I'm sure there's a photo somewhere of the bridge at the end of the trail, must admit, about 15 years ago it did my head in as I couldn't figure out where the line went over that road and being elevated, but that's what landscaping does I guess. I learned quite a bit from this video, good job 👍🏼

The pipe you saw on the right hand side, near the end, did not follow the line. It ran from Ramcroft Colliery to Hardwick Colliery, some 2.5 miles away. It was built in an amazingly short period of about 4 months It carried pumped minewater from the sump of number two shaft to Hardwick Colliery where it was used in the coal washery plant. After that it was discharged into the River Doe Lea. As a boy I always remember it running black. And we think rivers are polluted today!

Fascinating historical walk. How great to find the Byron brick.  Just wondering if you have done a walk near Blackwell Colliery.  I lost a few ancestors there in the infamous disaster.

Not intending to brag or anything but I cleared the Ramcroft line from the junction to the bridge. Took a fair while to get through that massive bramble patch in the middle but got there in the end... Would be ace if it was an official path, that connected up to 5 pits trail at Heath but that's up to council and the farmer to sort out, so probably will never happen. It is nice that it's not been cleansed though and is more like a nature trail. Fortunately it was a bird scarer you heard and not a gun shot

The line after where you finished is buried under a land fill site. I’ve ridden my bike through it and it proper stinks….
