It’s not officially Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Tower.

No one has ever said 'ho ho ho' with more nuance than Hans Gruber.

I'm a 57 year old American woman. I saw "Die Hard" in the theaters when it came out. I was 20 years old. We were all Blown Away by Alan Rickman in this! We didn't know who he was. This was his first film. But we were all enthralled and blown away! And we didn't have the internet back then, so we couldn't look him up. We next saw him in Robin Hook with Kevin Costner we all screamed, "It's Hans Gruber from Die Hard!" We were so excited!

Harry Potter people watching Die Hard: "It's Professor Snape!"

In 2002 I was peacekeeping in Bosnia at Christmas. Since we were away from our families I arranged a "Christmas Movie Night" with a triple feature of "It's A Wonderful Life", "Miracle on 34th Street", and "A Christmas Carol" at Canada House on our base for any soldiers that wanted to spend the evening together enjoying some classic Christmas films. Everyone was looking forward to "It's A Wonderful Life" - lots of us watched it each year at home as part of our own Christmas traditions. But once we got about 20 minutes into "Miracle on 34th Street" it was clear that not many were into it. I stopped the movie & asked if they wanted to continue, or move on to "A Christmas Carol". Someone said "Sir, we need to watch Die Hard. That's a favourite of my family at Christmas time.", and everyone started cheering "Die Hard". It was the first time I'd ever heard of "Die Hard" a Christmas movie, and I laughed because the idea was such a funny idea to me. We put it on and it we had a great time. So, as far as Canadian Soldiers are concerned, "Die Hard" is definitely a Christmas movie.

This was Alan Rickman's first feature film. One of the greatest debut's in the history of cinema. The American Film Institute ranked Hans Gruber as 46th on it's list of top 50 villains in the history of cinema. (And, yes, this is a Christmas movie.)

There is a club of Diehard fans that have a part at the building that was Nakatomi Plaza at Christmas time. The owner of the building lets them do it for one night a year.

Everyone says that Home Alone is a Christmas film and that's effectively a PG version of Die Hard. So either they're both Christmas films, or neither of them are.

I vote for both!

Between noting it was set at Xmas time, and that the limo driver put on Xmas music, you didn't note the wife was at a Xmas party and the building was decked out for the holiday, and I think it's fitting that her name is Holly.

@ 40:00: "He could be a fucking bartender for all we know."
In-joke as Bruce Willis was a bartender before acting.

Hans Gruber's long fall was performed by stuntman Ken Bates.

Alan Rickman was dropped a short distance onto a blue screen rig. How great was his face during that short drop?

Bates' long fall was 70' onto an air bag. At the time, it was one of the highest free falls ever performed for a film. It was considered a record setting stunt.

I fell in love with Bruce Willis (as a very young girl) when this came out- but I also fell in love with Hans Gruber and that voice!
Rip to Alan and prayers to Bruce- they left us with one hell if a Christmas movie to watch every year!

The blond guy with the good hair is Alexander Godunov. He was a dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet before he defected to the US in 1979.

Fun fact - the terrorist pausing to grab a candy bar was an unscripted moment by the actor. They'd been shooting all day and he was hungry - in the middle of the shot, inspiration took hold. The director thought it was hilarious and left it in the movie.

I think Hans knew what Takagi looked like and just wanted to toy with him. He likes to play mind games and does it throughout the movie.

Argyle was the boy who tried to steal the guitar in Ray's shop in The Blues Brothers.

Short answer - yes.
Long answer - Die Hard is a movie about a man estranged from his wife, going home for Christmas to try to save his marriage and reconnect with his family. It's absolutely a Christmas movie.
