It’s funny how the Plankton Movie did the one thing the Sandy movie didn’t: actually focus on its main character.

We finally saw how Plankton WENT TO COLLEGE
This is already an upgrade

Mr. Lawerence (Plankton’s VA) being one of the writers for the movie was one of the smartest and funniest decisions made. It just makes way too much sense and it paid off

Karen is the most reasonable antagonist in the film and she has every right to get angry at him. It's funny how Plankton seethes over Mr. Krab's success because his Chum Bucket doesn't get much attention in the Spongebob Squarepants Movie, but when Karen did him a favor by doing exactly what Plankton wanted 25 years ago (by adding sugar in a Chum no less), his green eyed ego really got the best of him that he's prioritizes his evil schemes on planning to steal the Krabby Patty formula over trying to improve the quality of his restaurant.

Regardless, at least Plankton Movie's ending is more wholesome though, even in defeat.

It’s funny how both the Sandy and Plankton movies will be remembered for being leaked long before they were supposed to come out (though Plankton has the benefit of being a good movie).

What stood out to me is SpongeBob and Patrick themselves. This movie has the best portrayals of them in recent years.

SpongeBob feels surprisingly grounded and isn’t just boringly optimistic and giddy, like a mascot.

And Patrick isn’t generically  brain dead and random. He’s lowkey chill in this movie but still dumb like in season 1.

Mr. Lawence is a fan of the Spongebob Squarepants series. He has shown, as a fan, that he does know what the franchise needs. The franchise needs writers like him if Nick wants to keep it going.

I can't believe it...
They actually locked in to make an actually decent SpongeBob movie!

Wait

This movie was based on "Single Cell Anniversary"?!

That makes a lot of sense, honestly. It's one of the few "middle seasons" episodes I genuinely love ("Chum Bucket Supreme" ain't half bad either; it's one of the rare times the show got Patrick right in an era where he was... not right) and it's a perfect episode to use as a basis for a bigger story about Plankton and Karen's relationship

Every time we get a bad SpongeBob movie or episode, people automatically say that the show should’ve ended decades ago, preferably after the movie. Even if they ended, it's just gonna come back no matter what. In a different scenario, a new series with a different art style and a different title like Scooby Doo, Transformers or the big two cartoon mascots, Mickey or Bugs.

Sandy’s Country Christmas was good too, btw.

Note: Mr Lawrence has been the head writer for the show since s10 all the way up to 15 which is currently airing

5:42 Sandy probably doesn’t even need a character arc. They should’ve just focused more on the adventure.

The fact that Plankton was originally written to be a one off gag villain is actually crazy to imagine. Similar to how the Joker was meant to be a one off as well

Modern SpongeBob is such a roller coaster. You went from bad, but then it tries to improve the quality, and nothing is more right than going from the tragedy of the Sandy Cheek movie, to the Plankton Movie.

In all seriousness, this movie not only give Plankton the credit he deserves, but is again one example that Modern SpongeBob can work, and has been for a decade if done right.

It’s  crazy to think the same guy who directed the loud house movie would go on to direct the best SpongeBob movie since sponge out of water.

Another reason also for why the Plankton movie is a lot better is also the fact that the Spongebob crew actually had control over the movie! According to Jay Lender, he said the SB crew had no input on the Sandy movie and all of its input in production was done via the studio and people  who never worked on SB. And boy howdy looking at the Sandy and Plankton movies back to back show how much having the correct people write for a product is extremely important.

Something that I noticed is that, even though modern SpongeBob actively tries to avoid continuity between episodes, there was actually a subtle shift in the status quo between seasons 13 and 14 that I think was influenced by the Plankton movie (which was most likely written between those two seasons). In season 13 episodes (such as Lockdown for Love), Plankton and Karen bicker with each other as usual, but in season 14 episodes (such as Tango Tangle), their relationship is in a much healthier state.

Also, the way SpongeBob reacts to the mind-control bucket helmet makes it seem like he’s never seen it functional before…I wonder if it’s trying to imply that the first movie takes place at the end of the series

Mr doug Lawrence should be the head writer of spongebob now. Even though sandy movie suffered from executive meddling the show is no different from the sandy movie. I truly believe Lawrence understands the characters and what the show should be about.

God,can you imagine a world where Plankton was removed after a few episodes? Imagine a video essay called "Mr Krabs' forgotten nemesis " with Plankton in the thumbnail

11:21 That sentence is wild, but that’s literally what happens in that scene. 😭
