The JoJo Pattern You Never Noticed

Why are children so important in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure?

Across the series, Araki keeps placing young characters close to the center of the conflict. Hayato helps expose Kira in Diamond is Unbreakable, Emporio carries the ending of Stone Ocean, Lucy Steel plays a major role in Steel Ball Run, and now Lulu may become important in The JOJOLands.

In this video, I talk about why this pattern keeps appearing in JoJo, and how children often represent innocence, justice, the future, and the humanity that JoJo villains threaten. This is not just about who defeats the villain physically, but about what these characters symbolize in Araki’s writing.

Ive always noticed Araki likes to add children into his stories and it was never random. Just like he portrayed how evil villains are by being cruel to animals.. children are in a similar way a moral judge in the parts. Hope u guys enjoy the video 🙏

Children are the future. Protect them. Thats Araki's message

"Your final challenge. Stop traumatizing children as a villain"

I loved hayato as a character mainly cause it is the first time we get a non-stand user having to face a stand user. up until then, it was always stand users against stand users, so it was interesting seeing the pov of a normal person witnessing these powers

this pattern was very noticeable..
there's always: the JoJo, the JoBro, the mentor, the kid, the main villain & the friends we make along the way

Pierce Hayato with the arrow and watch the strongest stand be born.

I first noticed with Anne in Part 3 that Araki was trying to add children characters, but couldn't quite figure out how to make them relevant to the story until Hayato.

I think Araki likes these child characters because they represent this idea of "civilian" characters and people who are not "protagonist"-types or don't usually have any powers being able to do important or consequential things nonetheless. They're kind of like the everyman of the story. Think of Poco in Part 1. I also like that their infancy is not depicted as a romanticized naievete: they all have their "darker" aspects.

I always interpreted as Araki having immense empathy / sympathy for children. Almost every kid in JoJos, even including young Jonathan and especially Dio, he shows how children suffer from poor environments and choices from the adults around them.

There is a feeling that he has genuine disdain for a lot of adults in his and societies at large, and he's not afraid to critique them in every part of JoJo's

They always have the most harrowing moments of their lives, bruh.

To be honest, "Humanity is something worth protecting" is kind of an emotional message Hollywood totally fails to deliver. Manga and anime are the only mainstream media that nail this love for humanity.
It probably stems from the grassroots nature of manga, since industry allows a staggering amount of new aspiring authors right out of tiny home studios into the field each year, and many of them crave hopeful messages like most of us.

One of JoJos main themes is Fate, and for a lack of better words, the fate of the future is in the hands of the children. Having them involved in the "fate" of the story is a direct representation of how they will either be actively (Hayato, Lucy Steel, Emporio) or passively (Smokey, Anne, Daiya) partaking in the fate of the future

At least thats a brutally shallow interpretation of why i think Araki consistently uses children as crucial characters in each part

I should Jojo my bizzare and adventure all over this comment section

@darbul217 2 months ago

Okay, the real reason: it's in the title. Araki wants to write an unpredictable story with high stakes. The whole structure of the story is a bunch of ridiculous "what if"s, and then executing those "what if"s naturally and in satisfying way for the audience. Having a completely helpless character like a child face against challenges that even the main characters with OP power struggle against is the epitome of that. It forces the readers to look at the story through a completely different lens. And all the themes about humanity are derived from that, it's like a conclusion.

My heart still sinks for Emporio, to me, he still really lost all of them.

Having a segment about Lulu but NOTHING about Tsurugi besides including some panels feels criminal. Don't mess with us JoJolion fans, there's like four of us 😭

@Salmonboyo 2 months ago

I don't mean to be that guy but yeah, I noticed Poco, Smokey, Anne, Hiyato, Emporio, Lucy and Tsurgi. Arguably Trish is the traumatized child from Golden Wind.

To be honest, the child hero is a trope that I love so much. Idk, maybe it’s because it epitomizes the concept of “the hero” at its most basic scaled down level.
