In Vietnam in 1970, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness.

"Charlie don't surf." is the next best line after "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

Back when movies were works of art.

Always loved the moment of compassion for the dying VC but the quick pivot to the surfer.

Many of my fellow vets will pick out the subtle but brilliant demonstration of leaders in combat and forward units when the Capt hands the Colonel the marching orders and without blinking he hands it to one of his people , he has people to read stuff for him he doesn’t waste time reading memos . Love it every time I see it and it’s a bit of excellent research on the directors part , or perhaps Duvall in all his brilliance knew already ….

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like victory". What a line.

Duval owned this role. Crazy freaking cavalry commander, letting his guy's surf with bombs blowing up everywhere. Those Air Cavalry units were known for being crazy like this too.

In 100 years from now this will still be legend

Robert Duvall, R.I. P., was one of the finest actors of his generation.He had that indefinable quality that set him apart . He will be sorely missed.

Love how Duvall was initially considered too small for the role, but you can clearly see how he just acts big.

That's talent. RIP big guy ❤

I met Robert Duvall once when I was working late at night at Honolulu International Airport, he said he was on his way to the Philippines to film Apocalypse Now, I told him it was based on Conrad's book The Heart of Darkness that took place in Africa, he was very nice and I got to shake his hand.

How much chaos can you put in one frame after another? I laughed out loud when the colonel, forgot to give the wounded guy water from his canteen.

Everytime I rewatch Apocalypse it blows my mind that it even got made. Like I've seen Heart of Darkness and know about the insanity of the shoot. But it still just looks insane.

Man, I thought he would never die. He was one of the last truly great actors of my time ❤️

@michaelwdagle7410 7 months ago

I think it's one of the most iconic roles in cinema.

Watching Robert Duvall go from mild-mannered Tom Hagen to loud, balls out Kilgore was my first realization of the range an actor can have. Incredible. RIP Robert Duvall.

Between the film's cinematography and picture quality, Apocalypse Now feels like it came out in the 90s instead of the 70s. If you would've showed me this movie when I was a little squirt back in the 90s, I would've never guessed that it was actually over a decade old.
