Sorry Tyler, but the SAS aren't a 'version' of anything. The SAS are the originals; all your Delta Force, your Rangers, your Seals... they all emulate the British SAS. The first and the best.

Yanks realising that England and France were at war for longer than the US has been relevant on the world stage is always a joy 😂

A fun fact, the Green River Knife in America (USA) was infact invented by an Englishman (a Yorkshireman) who worked in Sheffield and with Sheffield Steel. He moved to America and set up his own forge company called the Green River Trading Company and made knives based on the Steel made in Sheffield UK 🇬🇧. His knives were so expertly made and to a much higher quality of any other knives in America at the time (didn’t bend, snap or break) that his Green River Knives became a household name, and a lot of other companies went bust because they couldn’t make such high quality steel.

And a follow on from that, China renamed a city they had to Sheffield so they could stamp their cheaper less quality steel with the Sheffield name, so all Steel and all steel products made with British Sheffield steel is now marked Sheffield UK.

Sheffield UK Steel is still the best made steel in the world and is used as a benchmark to work by.

William, Duke of Normandy was also known at the time as "William the Bastard", and is better known today as William the Conqueror. The Normans weren't really French, as they were descendants of the Vikings who had settled in Normandy. And, literally days before the Battle of Hastings, King Harold had been fighting another battle up near York, the Battle of Stamford Bridge, where he defeated a Viking invasion.

The longbow was definitely perfected in England, and became the medieval equivalent of a massed artillery barrage, picking off French knights long before they came anywhere near the English lines. The two-fingered V-sign (with the back of the hand outwards) has it's origins with the longbowmen, as the French would cut off those two fingers of any bowmen they captured, to prevent them from ever being able to draw a bow again. So showing those two fingers to the French became a way of taunting them, and that's how it developed into a common show of defiance.

The Wars of the Roses were one of the many different civil wars we have had in the UK, and one of the three main English ones. The first was "The Anarchy", when forces loyal to either King Stephen or Queen Matilda battled for supremacy - if you've ever watched "Cadfael", that's set around that time. Then we had the Wars of the Roses, and finally the English Civil War. But there's also been things like the Jacobite Rebellions, and plenty of other conflicts that you could class as forms of civil war. Plus Scotland has it's own history of internal conflicts and power struggles too.

Yes, it is quite literally true that the Sun never set on the British Empire. This is because it really did span the entire globe, and before the Sun set somewhere, it was already rising somewhere to the west of that place.

And you're right that most Americans don't appreciate just how high a price Britain paid for victory in WW2. While America came out of the war richer and more powerful, Britain basically gave up everything in the name of becoming the world's moral conscience. We sacrificed our empire and our economy, coming out of the war broke and very battered. But much of the world today recognises that we did this for the right reasons, showing them that you have to take a stand against evil no matter what the cost in treasure, and that's why they tend to listen to us when we say "this is wrong, and we need to do something about it".

And the Falklands War was actually about liberating the British people living on the Islands from an illegal Argentinian occupation. The islanders have said time and again that they want to be British and, under the terms of the UN Charter, they have that right of self-determination, but Argentina even today refuses to recognise that right.

Yes, Britain has it's own independent nuclear deterrent. Britain actually had a nuclear weapons programme before America did, called the Tube Alloys Project. British scientists were part of the Manhattan Project, and solved many key problems during it, but were then shut out of post-war collaboration by the McMahon Act. So we had to go it alone and develop and test our own bombs, beginning with Operation Hurricane in 1952. Once we developed our own H-bombs in the late 1950s, America began collaboration again, which actually helped the American nuclear weapons programme as our H-bombs used a more advanced design that made them more efficient in the use of precious nuclear materials. So the current Trident warheads in both the US and UK owe a lot to earlier British work, and the British Trident warheads are not the same as the American ones, as they're a bit more advanced. While the US ones are a fixed yield that can't be changed before launch, the UK ones can be altered by selecting one of a number of different yields. And no, despite what a lot of Americans seem to believe, America does not have any control of, or power of veto over the use of, British nuclear weapons.

The SAS were really the very first Special Forces unit anywhere, and many US units are based on them. In fact, Delta is effectively a direct copy of the SAS, as it copied the organisation exactly when originally set up.

Least forgotten !   Up until the British Empire came along slavery had been a way of life for every nation on every continent throughout the whole of recorded history.  No matter how detrimental to it's economy or how many protested , the British Empires moral crusade to abolish global slavery , especially the 3000yr old West African/Middle Eastern slave trade , was seen as a relentless duty to mankind.  It was a defining moment in the Empires history that you will never see taught in state schools.

The video's schoolboy humour reminds me of two excellent and eminently readable history books: "1066 and all that" and "A thousand years of annoying the French".

Tyler, the sad thing is I've served with Americans in the military, and many are great at their jobs and good people. But mentioning winning WW1 and WW2, and rescuing us, is seen as an insult to the thousands of British and Commonwealth troops who fought with us. Once I went drinking with young American officers from the USS Nimitz and they talked about how they won WW2 to help us out. I said goodnight and went home! All due to ignorance and bad history teaching in the USA!😊

I love that he said 'confusing rules about queuing' when the rules are literally just... get in the queue.

6:10 Yes, Game of Thrones is pretty much the War of the Roses transfered into a Fantasy setting

Hi Tyler - the conflict between France and Britain is part of the reason the French empire funded Washingtons rebellion ( 1765 - 1783) , and provided weapons, troops, and senior advisors (military commanders) - without help from France, there would have no funding to pay for the troops, weapons and uniforms needed to win your Revolutionary War.  This is the reason Washington troops wore Blue coats - they were essentially French army uniforms

That decision however, was a stretch too far, and led to the fall of King Louis XVI  (16th) and triggered the French Revolution in 1789

The Uk finally paid of its war debt in 2006, 83 million to the USA and 23 million to Canada. War bonds were paid of in 2015.

Yes, some things were missed completely, like the English Civil War (1642 - 1651) between the Royalists and the Roundheads which led to the execution of Charles I and Britain becoming a Republic (1651 - 1660) and Oliver Cromwell laying the foundations of a modern, professional army.

11:49 “The sun never sets on the Empire”means it’s always daylight somewhere in a British territory.

The small boat rescues were from Dunkirk not D-Day at all. An amazing operation carried out by small boat owners who risked their lives sometimes more than once to pick up the soldiers who were trapped on the beaches,a never  to be forgotten part of history.

In the UK. In general history education in school, we focus a lot about WW1 and WW2, for obvious reasons.

Fun fact the sas are the oldest, deadliest, most skilled and highest trained special forces on the planet the sas also train the us navy seals in advanced stealth and combat scenarios

"The sun never set on the Empire", it means that sundown over one part of the Empire is sunrise over another part.

19:14 the SAS was the world first modern special forces those men with knives and sabotage training. The dared and they won.

Yes Tyler you wouldnt learn anything about our history- America only spent the last few months in WW1 but you are told ,in effect, that you won it; insulting to the millions on all sides who died in 4 years of hard slog- same as in WW2 when a lot of ignorant Americans tell us they saved us! Taking everyone elses glory- oh and by the way we had to pay for any equipment you gave us,only finishing paying in 2006- we were the only country America insisted we pay - so much for so called allies🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

You might say that while the British Empire dissolved after WWII, it didn’t actually disappear.
Instead, it became The Commonwealth of Nations, a democratic trading group, still in force today.
