David Gates wrote this after his father passed away. So beautifully sad. Love your reactions. They are so very so very heartfelt!

When my husband  (soulmate) was killed at age 28 , then buried both parents, and buried 6 Brothers.  All before I was 45.  I would give anything to see them once again.   God Bless you for your losses!

David Gates said per "The Guardian" this song was about the death of his father. “My father died in 1963 and I wanted to write a song in memory of him. He did live to see some of my early progress towards success, but not the major songs or stardom with Bread. As with all my songs, the music led and the words tried to keep up, but they came pretty quickly. I wrote the lyrics—‘I would give everything I own just to have you back again’—so that they could be interpreted as a love song, but when I played it for my wife, she knew right away that it was about my father. She cried.”

Still can’t get through this song without crying.  Lost my parents in my mid 20’s, now in my mid 50’s…30 years and this song still hits…EVERYTIME!! ❤

Before I saw this reaction I put this song on  my Facebook page.  My husband died last Sunday.  38 years and I feel broken

I tear up every time I hear this song. David Gates was extraordinary during this period.

David Gates. A beautiful voice an entire generation immediately recognizes. Love your interpretations!

Tomorrow is my dad’s birthday. He passed away two years ago, listening to this song made me cry like I never had before.❤

My father died a few years ago and I miss him every day. He taught what it really means to be a man and not be afraid to love somebody completely. RIP dad.

My mother told me that if she hadn't lost 2 babies before I was born, then I wouldn't be here.  I have two grown daughters and a beautiful grandbaby.  Through my own  losses in my 66 years, I've learned to trust that the good Lord knows best and to be thankful in all circumstances.  Not necessarily for all circumstances, but in them.

My husband died suddenly  in January. I would give anything to  have him back!

Discovered this song after having lost my father when I was 14.  Played the song at my wife's funeral.  Our son was 14.  Tearing up as I post this.  It will be 6 years in less than two weeks.

This song was about him losing his dad.  It's so beautiful.

Your golden heart shows up every time you react to a heartwarming song. Loved your sincere comments. You’re blessed with a wonderful family and they’re blessed to have you at the “Helm” so to speak el Captain!

For me this is an old girl friend, she's not dead but we are not together. Been nearly 50 years, still miss her so much.

50 + years later...and I can still feel something when I hear the music of Bread.   For me, it's timeless.

I used to think this was a song about a guy who lost his wife or girlfriend to someone else. The real story is so relatable to many of us who have lost a parent or both of them.
God Bless

You are a lovely couple.  Thank you for the reaction.  This was about David Gate's father.

Jim Croce ' Time in a Bottle'  Its deep. He died not too long after the release of that song. It's like he knew.

My dad passed away of heart failure when I was seven. My brother was "hit" at the age of nineteen. My sister passed away due to a skull fracture from a fall a little more than a year later. (This is one reason why I don't find videos with people falling to be funny at all.) Finally, I was my mom's caregiver until she passed in 2015, from Parkinson's. When Queen Pegasus mentioned the motherhood aspect, that brought me to tears.
