Syril starts out just wanting to find and capture the person who murdered two security guards, and ends up being partially responsible for a genocide, which he himself dies in.
If you think about it from that perspective he has a similar story and character development to Andor, just mirrored into aiding the empire instead of destroying it.

Andor really reminds me of the real life systems that perpetuate themselves like the empire

Eedy says that Syril's father considered himself an 'adventurer' who just and left one day, and Kyle Soller said that when Syril was very small his father just 'went to work' and never came back. So Syril is a guy who was abandoned by a man who seemingly had no sense of personal responsibility, and then grows up to be a man who's obsessed with proving how responsible he can be...

I just realized another way Syril mirrors Cassian: where Cassian has greatness essentially thrust upon him, Syril actively chases grateness to the bitter end.

Syril persued grateness through every official opportunity, but Cassian made the best of his situation and became great because he was needed.

I love these andor/star wars videos! Please keep it up!

Syril story is sad because he is us. We don't want that to be true but, when we are looking at the bigger story's. the hero is almost never going be us. We want syril not yo win but part want him becausehe is us. Of course this is for some not all that can be hard to expect.

Apart from any consideration on Syril the character, there's a side consideration on Syril's storyline cinematography which is a constant homage to Bertolucci The Conformist. Everything Syril is The Conformist: his narcisism, his mother, above all the house he shares with Dedra, it's the biggest possible reference to Bertolucci's movie (all in black and white). Him being used as an instrument by the party to do evil in a foreign land, falls in love with his victims and can't accept that in which he himself was involved.

Honestly, his character of mirrors  William Hope.
William is a Canadian actor, best known for his numerous role portraying Lieutenant Scott Gorman in Aliens.

Syril is low-key one of my favorite characters.  And it's not because I think he's a good person, but because I find him so fascinating.  He's so well written and well acted, that I understood why he is the way he is, just from his interactions with Eddy.  Syril is a hurt little boy looking for male approval and female admiration, who believes he's owed something.  Don't get it twisted, Syril has morals and values, but he still has ambitons and when things don't go the way he wants them too, he lashes out, violently.  While I can emphathize with his upbringing, it doesn't excuse his actions and deserved what he got.  He deserved to know in the last moments of his life, his worst nightmare has come true.  His life is anonymous and meaningless.

The story of Syril Karn is one of Complicity and the Need to prove One's Worth to the world, or in this case the galaxy, at the cost of ignoring all the warning signs one might otherwise see that the system that person is currently serving has something wrong with it...
Realisticly, for every hundred Cassian Jeron Andors there are tens of thousands of Syril Karns out there, that will end up, more often than not, believing up until the very end that They are on the right side of History without ever realizing the truth. Sometimes that long-awaited Epiphany will never come at all, which is the most realistic and terrifyingly accurate outcome...

I really enjoy your break downs your way of metalizing things to put things into perspective is really intriguing along with your handwriting I'd love to see more breakdowns of different media

Syril Karn is my favorite Star Wars villain because he's just a guy. He's not some evil sith lord, he's not some high level Imperial official, he's not any sort of important figure. He's just a guy who wants to right a wrong and help find and stop terrorists. And when he realizes what he was a part of, it horrifies him.
edit: 15:36 I am a firm believer that Syril was seconds away from starting just such a redemption arc when he died.

Syril as much as Cassian is the Messenger but to different audience. Andor is not only heroic stories but also cautionary tales.

I really enjoy your format

What i really like about andor is what nemick says about entire legions already being enlisted to the cause and not knowing it yet
People like perrin or syril or luke (until he accidentallys himself in to the plot)
There are so many people who would probably join the rebellion if given the chance or dont really support the empire syril simply wants law and order which what the empire offers he would have supported the republic if the chance because thats what they offered
So many people who aren't capable of being andor and pulling off countless missions and hitting the empire where it hurts people like mon mothma secretly funding a rebellion  people like luthen a master of puppets pulling the strings to create a rebellion
Most people are like syril and perrin just waiting for their call to action but until then theyre stuck in the empire and so they cant really do much but live their day to day lives  and hope things get better even if that means supporting an empire with hopes that law and order can be established and even of those who are in power are evil to trust the system that they'll eventually be removed from power and good people will be in power
But what can they do to bring that about

"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.."  It's more like you're around long enough to realize that the good you tried to do never mattered to the people or the system you idealized.  Like its always been pointless.

While he is certainly the most prominent, Syril is not the only everyman in this. Not even on the empires side.
There is the drill seargent who challenges his orders because he knows sending freshlings into a bigly agitated crowd is a desaster waiting to happen.
There is the judge? In season one who just does not care and just follows the letter of the law. Many of the imperial army on Aldani come across as just doing their job. Pair that with Solo showing us that the imperial army is full of people who saw little alternative in thier lives.
There is the the propaganda spinners at the beginning of season two who come across as people who just love storytelling and are happy to talk about their work. Yes they must know much more than Syril or an amry seargent about the bigger picture and what their work contributes. But even they are not mustache twirling evil.

I don’t think Syril was redeemed in the End. Even after he realised how evil the empire is, the person he attacks is the one, he hates for disrupting his Imperial order

One of the problems with liberalism is actually the fredom it subscribes to us. When we give a child freedom to choose any purpose often it’s difficult to even establish one. One of the main appeals to facism to the ordinary citizen is that it gives the main in group a purpose. Those who lack meaning are given it to them. It’s imposed on them. Living for the state almost replaces god with the state. They don’t have to suffer in the search for meaning.

I too wonder what could have become of him. But his sudden end without a last word.. It fits exactly because it is such an insult to him.
All he wanted was to matter in a small way and get recognition for it. Not riches, not power, not even fame. Just recognition by those close to him for doing a good job.
But the empire doesn't care. And so he dies meaningless, in the very massacre he helped create, with the murderer he hunted for 2 years not even recognizing him.
