Every Banned & Censored Moment in Spongebob

Taking a look at every banned episode, censored moment, or deleted storyboard scene in the Spongebob Squarpants series. There were a lot of other moments that got altered, either due to animation errors, or a change in concept art design, but for this I wanted to primarily focus on moments that were removed for being too violent or contraversial. Enjoy!

Squidward erasing his memory with a literal eraser smoothing his brain is a better joke anyway.

10:26 "why didnt you tell me this was my mother's house?!" "Why didnt you ask?" IS DIABOLICAL

I feel like if SpongeBob was on CN, several of these scenes would have made it in without any issues.

“A little too violent”

Meanwhile squid gets mangled beyond recognition every day now.

The fact that they even CONSIDERED referencing a SpongeBob creepypasta is amazing. Like, how many other animated shows have done that?

3:32 this was too much but squidward getting his nail ripped off in another episode was perfectly fine 😭

6:40 Fun fact: This is Tom Kenny explaining how he came up with the SpongeBob voice. He was telling a joke about a christmas elf complaining about his... unfortunate shift placements.

8:06 I'm very glad they cuy the scene because

1: It seems very out of character for early Patrick to get violently angry at something like this.

2: It's way funnier for him to confidently believe wumbo is a real word and list all it's totally real use cases

I actually remembered getting jumpscared from the Randomland episode because I was never expecting to see Red Mist get referenced. It’s funny how Nickelodeon allowed this, but they did get me.

The sailor mouth episode came out after 9/11 and after hearing nothing but sad news for a long time as a child, I really needed that laugh.

3:22 it’s funny that his shadow looks like Squiddy

given how many painted scenes were cut, i want an episode made entirely of painted scenes

Fun fact: In Iran, Since Khamenei (The supreme leader) doesn't want ladies to get ""naked"" with a bikini, Most SpongeBob episodes with sandy are either cropped or zoomed in in random places or colored with a crappy color fill rotoscope or just straight up remove the scene.

August 2026 Edit: Don't worry, I'm actually alive. And yes, That's the same person. I wasn't expecting Khamenei to get assassinated by Bibi one day. So yeah.

I remember watching the Squidward toenail scene live. I knew immediately it was too graphic 😢.

You can still find "Mid-Life Crustacean" on the season 3 DVD, thankfully.
In fact, I own the complete first three seasons on DVD, along with the 2004 movie. That, my friends, is the classic SpongeBob era (along with all that era's accompanying comics, novels, and games).
