I like that one comic where Supergirl's spirit/soul meets Deadman after Crisis and they talk about the value of helping ppl even if nobody knows who you are. Thought that was a nice touch.

Plus supergirl back in the day was a nomad and a loner first a college student then a camera woman, then a gudience counselor, then does soap operas, then a college student again, so they could never make up their minds.

As a big fan of the arrowverse supergirl, this video was very enlightening. I knew she had died in crisis, but I always assumed Linda Danvers and Kara Zor El were the exact same person.

The way Supergirl managed to remain a presence in and out of the comics even during the time of the "No Kara Zor-El" mandate is a real testament to DC writers' creativity. I'm personally quite glad to have Kara back as THE Supergirl, but there's no denying that the alternate versions from this time are fascinating characters in their own right who have cemented their place in fans' minds and in comics history.

It's a shame that one year after Supergirl got her first movie, she was killed off in the comics.

11:33 I know it’s technically not incest.. but it looks wrong

Just a brief note: Thank you for putting respect on Otto Binder's name by pronouncing it correctly. I understand the confusion, but my eye can't help but twitch when ppl rhyme it with 'finder'. 😆

I was today years old when I found out that DCAU's Kara isn't related to Kal.
Great video as always!

It does irritate me when many comic fans don't read the Supergirl comics (outside of her death in Crisis) from of the eras and only know her through the adaptations. This seems to be changing with the recent Supergirl movie actually convincing people to read the original Woman of Tomorrow comic but hopefully this also convinces people to read the previous eras

You guys think Donna Troy’s the most complicated DC character?

Supergirl’s been convoluted for the longest time. Until the last decade.

Peter David's run on Matrix Supergirl is simply the best the character has ever been. It's the only Supergirl run that can truly be called incredible well written and a classic. I remember being so blown away when I read it and by the subject matter. It's amazing how Kara Zor-El has been around for like, 60 years and she seems to lack anything iconic. But in 10 years, Matrix went from "let's bring that protoplasm mentioned with Pre-Crisis Lex" to life! to a character that was legitimately fascinating and still stirs my imagination.

Fallen Angel is a great comic and I wish it was reprinted.

“We don't do it for the glory.
We don't do it for the recognition.
We do it because it needs to be done.
Because if we don't, no one else will.
And we do it even if no one knows what we've done.
Even if no one knows we exist.
Even if no one remembers we ever existed.”
- Kara Zor-El, Supergirl of Earth-1

a great video that does a very thorough overview of the complex and convoluted history of this fascinating character.  I really got into Supergirl during Peter David's Many Happy Returns story, that coming out when i was really getting into comics.

there is one obscure appearance that you missed i think is worth a mention.  so obscure that officially Supergirl doesn't actually appear, but we know better...  Christmas with the Superheroes #2, a holiday themed anthology that came out in 1988.  it has a number of good short stories in it, Superman saving a stranded motorist, the Flash making sure some orphans have presents under the tree for the morning, Green Lantern full-on A Christmas Carol-ing a guy.  but there is also a story about Deadman, the circus acrobat turned ghost who possesses the living to fight for justice.  it's the holidays and he is glum in the astral plan about not getting to live a real life, not being able to enjoy the season.  then he meets a blonde woman who can see and communicate with his spectral form.  in talking with her she reminds him that he does what he does because it's right, not for a reward.  saying "we do what we do, because if we don't, no one else will.  even if no one knows what we've done.  even if no one remembers we ever existed."  when asked her name she says "Kara, but i doubt that will mean anything to you" and disappears, saying she is need elsewhere.  again, this was in 1988, after Kara Zor-El's erasure from canon post-Crisis.  despite editorial mandate, the spirit of the Last Daughter of Krypton endured, still helping people in her own way.  to me it is one of the more meaningful metatextual stories i've read.

Man alive, it was no understatement on your part Owen that Supergirl's backstory was convoluted!

Personally, l still love Pater David's run on the character.

I'm a huge comics fan and I remember being a kid and genuinely mourning when they killed off Supergirl.  She was always one of my favorite characters along with Superman.  Later when they tried to bring her back as Matrix I was like WTF?!?  The whole Earth bound angel storyline was just stupid.  I was so happy when they finally brought Supergirl proper back after fan backlash.

Linda Danvers Supergirl was and still is my favourite Supergirl.

I remember reading the leob story back in the day and being so confused that they were reintroducing Supergirl 😅

Glad Supergirl has more prominent role in my adventures with superman
