Why He Built a "Supermax" Prison for Retired Military Dogs

Mike Ritland spent 12 years as a Navy SEAL before founding Trikos International, supplying elite working dogs to the DoD, DHS, and Border Patrol. The Warrior Dog Foundation wasn't the plan — but when he discovered that retired special operations dogs were facing euthanasia, he decided to take them home, rather then let them die.
Since 2013, the foundation has taken in hundreds of dogs, all deemed 'too dangerous' to rehome. The facility is built like a supermax: epoxy coated concrete, rebar-reinforced walls, designed specifically for 'high energy' dogs.
Most staff have been bitten, many have been hospitalized, needing 90+ stitches. The kennel holds 30 dogs at capacity, with a waiting list of a dozen more — all of which would otherwise have been euthanized.
