What great memories for me, my dad and I used to drive to all the beaches down there, but one that stuck in the mind was Austinmer for some reason.
Nice to see all the frequently skipped stations properly!
Who would take a physical paper on the train, trust me it's much more convenient on the app!

Last time I made the mistake of casually picking up a newspaper sitting on a train seat, I was confronted by the fact that the previous owner had 'enjoyed himself'

I grew up in Austinmer and lived there until 1983 when I was 15. I lived there for 11 years and is my hometown. We lived just across the road from the railway station. The big 2 storey house on the corner used to be my late Grandmother’s house although it was just a fibro house back then. I have very fond memories of growing up there and it was only a 10/15 minute walk to the beach. It was a lovely tight knit community back in the 70’s with friendly neighbours who looked out for one another. I also went to Austinmer School and it was a great school, great kids and teachers. Can’t say the same for Bulli High though. My daughter and I went back to the Illawarra a couple of years ago and I have to say I was a little disappointed with how much it has changed. The houses are like Millionaire’s row now and it’s just a lot of Sydney yuppies who have retired there. Some of the town has kept its old world charm, but it’s become too commercialised and I would never go back there to live. Having said that, it’s a treasured part of my childhood and one I’ll always remember fondly. I am a Wollongong girl after all.

Re reading the newspapers on the trains, I remember that too. Things have changed for sure. Now with smart phones and all, mind you though,  reading the Daily Telegraph has changed too. It is not worth reading any more. Austinmer is a nice spot for sure.

I love watching your videos Kerry. Looking at all the lovely places my husband and I could go. Seeing what’s there and available for food etc.  You must get quite tired but all the exercise does one good also.  The scenery is always amazing and just seeing how you can get there by public transport is inspiring. Great views along the coast line Kerry , unfortunately don’t have many trains in Victoria like that. Can’t wait to get up Sydney way and do some exploring hopefully in the New Year.

That stopping train sounded like some of the old cane trains from a short career in the cane industry. Everybody used to stick a 'sprag", a short section of metal through the wheel spokes to stop the cane trucks rolling away from the spur parking before the locos came to collect them. If the loco boys missed any they would drag the bin to the mill with the wheels locked. Plenty of Clank Clank cane bins going past. 😉😊
