In this video I take a train from Central station down to Wollongong. Here I change for a bus over to Moss Vale. At Moss Vale I have lunch at the Moss Vale Hotel which is just across the road from the Moss Vale railway station.

From Moss Vale I catch a train to Macarthur then change for a train back to Central station.

The whole trip was done on my Gold Opal card and cost just $2.50 for the whole day out.

If you go to Trip Planner and bring up the 11;30 AM service from Wollongong coach stop to Moss Vale and then scroll down the page slightly, you'll find the following:

" Opal can be used between Wollongong and Moss Vale, Exeter and Bundanoon stations.
If travelling by Coach between Wollongong station and Moss Vale, Exeter or Bundanoon stations you can use your Opal card or contactless card or device to tap on or off at your origin/destination station provided the origin/destination is an Opal enabled station.

If travelling onto Goulburn, or other Opal enabled station along the Southern Highlands Line, you should not tap off when transferring from Coach to an Intercity train but instead tap off at your destination station.

Booking is not required for Opal customers on this route."

My itinerary for the day:
Depart Central on the 9.27 train to Kiama.
Arrive Wollongong 10:57
Depart Wollongong on the bus to Moss Vale 11.30 AM
Arrive Moss Vale 13.05
Depart Moss Vale 14.59
Arrive Central Station 17.22

We watched this video as a family 2 weeks ago and the following weekend, my 17-year-old and 19-year-old whipped out their Opal cards and followed in your footsteps! They loved it!

Hi from Hobart. Its been 30years since I had a stint living in Sydney & did the train to the 'Gong, then another time the car down & over to Moss vale. Its a lovely part of the world & great to see your enjoyable trip. Thank you.

That was great Kerry, thank you so much. I lived in the Gong most of my life with family over the
mountain. Shame about the pass but you get that occasionally.
This was all my old stomping ground. Living in rural NSW now, I miss the beach so much.
It was a lovely trip you did.

Hi Kerry,
Great video!
Did you know that there is two more opal coaches
1 is the one to Bathurst, however you do need to book but it costs nothing and just tap on at Lithgow station.
And 2nd one is the one to Goulburn from moss vale which you just turn up and board like the one you travelled on!

Another enjoyable video Kerry. I have traveled your original planned trip going up Macquarie Pass, it was the same bus driver. He is a very good driver & while Macquarie Pass does have some tight bends no one should feel uneasy when he's at the wheel. It was good to see the alternative route.

If they're going to keep using trainlink buses as opal card pick-ups, then surely an opal reader can be installed. They also need to do that to the one that takes you from Campbelltown to Goulburn.

About 40 years ago I did the trip, with a train that went from Wollongong to Moss Vale. I believe that when they stopped the train between the two the bus had to have the same fare rules.
