Texas Homeless Crisis: Why 27,000 People Are Returning to Austin? explores the hidden forces driving one of the most unexpected homelessness surges in the state. In this documentary, we uncover why thousands are coming back to Austin despite stricter policies, rising living costs, and aggressive encampment sweeps. Behind the city’s booming tech image lies a harsh reality: limited affordable housing, overwhelmed shelters, mental-health gaps, addiction spikes, and a system struggling to support its most vulnerable residents. Many return because Austin remains one of the few places offering basic services, warmer weather, and a chance — however small — to survive. This crisis isn’t just a local issue; it exposes deep flaws in Texas’s statewide approach to homelessness. Austin isn’t failing alone — it’s revealing the truth Texas can’t keep hiding.

Texas spent billions to “fix” homelessness, yet 27,000 people are marching right back into Austin. That’s not a crisis — that’s proof the system is rewarding failure. Until the state stops enabling addiction and starts demanding accountability, Austin will keep becoming the dumping ground for people who refuse to change and politicians who refuse to lead.

I was homeless in austin

I was a sucessful businessperson until Gov. Rick Perry a ok'd texting and driving. A young driver hit me head on at 75 mph. I have had 10 orthopedic surgeries, lost my business, gone through extreme poverty and got a tiny settlement from the insurance company. I have worked the whole time but because I'm disabled I can't get a full time job. I don't drink or do drugs and never did anything wrong except be the victim of a corrupt system. Now I'm 69 and probably going to be homeless because so many people moved into the non profits who were on drugs when I still have a SS check and extra income from my business! This state is completely corrupt, what a joke our Governor is.

Austin is now a magnet for the homeless because they have gotten their homeless strategies from liberal towns like Seattle and San Francisco, which have also failed miserably. The city has burned through tens of millions with NO accountability, only to make things worse for the residence and the homeless. I escaped Austin 10 years ago. I now live in a small town east call Elgin. Our local police do not allow loitering or sleeping on sidewalks. Like many other small towns we send the homeless to Austin.

The math is every homeless person could have 1 million dollars with the budget compaired to numbers

I’d like to see a video on the homeless that chose to be homeless because they used to categorize homeless as the ones who want to be homeless and the ones who end up homeless. Now they just talk about the ones that end up homeless but nobody is talking about the ones that wanted to be homeless anymore. I’d like to hear more about the ones that became homeless because they wanted to become homeless. Can you do something on that type video for documentary? Thank you I was homeless. I was in a shelter and I know a lot of stuff about what they do and what they don’t do and how it works. That’s that part of the system that only we people know, but we don’t tell. The real story is untold, but I still like your video I think you did a good job for somebody who doesn’t really know the truth totally but then maybe they’re only letting you tell what you’re telling because they control all of that too.

I don't give a damn I've been there done that and I know that you're not homeless if you're not looking for a home and all you want is drugs or alcohol fix the root problem...

The city of austin is causing more damage to the homeless, giving them by taking their stuff and thrown it in the garbage can give them a ticket, put them in jail, then they go right back to where you were. And do it all over again , how there is that Mitchell health, they don't really help you. I was on the street for 26 years and I have mental health problems. So if you want to help my homeless Get these politicians. To make it mandatory to go to rehab for one year then give them a home if they are disable.\nAnd can't work
Give them social security or sdi

The Austin government ALLOWED homeless people to set up tents on City Hall and allowed camping on city property and parks. The police and EMT depts resources are stretched thin. Give the homeless two options, 1 is to get help through some type of program or 2, get the hell out of town. Hit drug dealers hard, ban peddling and don’t allow open air camping.

You forgot to add to root causes the breakdown of the family or did you imply it?

@GnosticAnarchy 4 months ago

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of these types of hand-wringing outcries that refuse to acknowledge the Truth About Homelessness, its causes and potential solutions being deliberately and intentionally ignored. Gang involvment in the MANAGEMENT of these places and the PROFIT incentives of those claiming to be helpful are a start. I could run a homeless system single handedly. Every single homeless person would be given the equal opportunity to build a life from the ground up, or they would know they are not wanted in TEXAS and get the f out. Two options, get your sh*t together or GTFO!
