How far could £1 really go in 1970s Britain?

Far enough for football cards, comics, a trip to the pictures, fish and chips, bus fares, crisps, sweets, a pint — and even a record to take home.
In this episode of BRITAIN GONE BY, we're travelling back to a time when a single pound note could stretch across an entire Saturday.
In the early 1970s, football cards cost just a few pence, comics were pocket-money purchases, a packet of crisps could be 3p, a Freddo cost 2p, and even a cinema ticket remained below £1 for most of the decade. Markdown colado Markdown colado
We'll remember the corner shop, seaside arcade, chip shop, Saturday morning pictures, old Routemaster buses, milk bottles on the doorstep, seven-inch singles and the everyday purchases that made a pound feel surprisingly valuable.
Of course, prices were rising quickly throughout the 1970s — but looking back today, some of these numbers are almost impossible to believe.
So what would YOU have spent your £1 on?
And which 1970s price do you remember most?

I take a nostalgic trip through nineteen seventies Britain to discover twenty things you could buy for under a pound, from football cards and comics to fish and chips, bus fares and a family fry-up.

I explore how far a pound note could stretch at the newsagent, school canteen, corner shop, seaside arcade, pub and chip shop, with prices for everyday treats such as Radio Times, cigarettes, milk, bread, eggs and a seven-inch single.

I also look at changing habits, rising prices and familiar brands including Panini, Heinz, Wall's, Cadbury's and Coca-Cola. How much of this everyday seventies life do you remember?
