The abandoning of the “Satanic Panic” plot after a LITERAL PORTAL TO HELL OPENS UP IN THE TOWN SQUARE* has got to the be the most overt example of them just not even giving a shit about the plots they build. Then again, it was obvious in season 1 that none of the “lore” was actually crafted, just made up on the spot for whatever seemed cool and felt the most 80’s-est.
I just realized that Dr. Brennar, Billy, and Kali are the only characters that died and were in more than one season. Every other character died in the same season they were introduced.
Stranger things season 1 and 2 endings felt like the best ways to end the series. S1 felt bittersweet while S2 ending felt like a complete story for our characters and closing the gate was the best we can do
It's the writing for me. The 12 kids thing should have never happened! They veered way off course and sidelined the characters we love. Also, some of the special effects look cheap, despite the big budget.
S2, or S3 at a push, would have been natural end points. After Vecna was introduced, the show kind of went off the rails imo. Should have left the Mindflayer as the 'big bad'
Vecna should have kidnapped Mike in season 5, which would raise the stakes for everyone to save him. Ever since season 1, Mike has been completely useless. This final season could have been an excellent opportunity to redeem his character.
I liked holly & the kids, but they did not deserve that much screen time. they should’ve saved all that for the spinoff. I wanna see the og cast, I wanna see them get completed, or at least somewhat completed arcs, in their final season. instead they all got sidelined from their own show & were given the most half-assed conclusions that didn’t make sense for their character or were just cruel.
What's weird is that S4's ending offered the perfect opportunity to change the formula. They gave themselves the perfect opportunity to kill off a few of their characters, or otherwise incapacitate them in S5. But instead they decided to chicken out and do a 180 and put down a giant metal bandaid on the rift and pretend things were normal-ish.
The simple plot point of "The military and the core group unite to fight Vecna and the Flayer" would have taken a lot of the plot and focused it in an easy to tie up direction

Stranger Things Season 5 was kind of a mess but should we really be all that surprised.
