During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, Kampfgruppe Peiper raced through the Ardennes with powerful Tiger II and Panther tanks but a critical weakness: fuel. After capturing American gasoline at Büllingen, Joachim Peiper’s armored spearhead pushed toward much larger U.S. fuel reserves near Stavelot and Francorchamps. American quartermasters responded by evacuating millions of gallons aboard hundreds of trucks, while engineers destroyed fuel stocks, blocked roads, and demolished bridges to keep the gasoline out of German hands. This video explores the overlooked logistics race behind the Ardennes offensive and how shrinking fuel supplies, forced detours, and a severed supply route helped leave Peiper’s armored force isolated around La Gleize.
