Operation Greif put a few dozen German commandos in American jeeps and American uniforms on December 16, 1944, and asked them to do what an army could not: seize the Meuse bridges behind the Ardennes front. Within days, American military policemen were stopping generals to ask who was married to Betty Grable. The Wehrmacht would never again have the men, the fuel, or the time to try anything like it.
This documentary follows Otto Skorzeny's 150th Panzer Brigade and the Einheit Steilau jeep teams from the Wolf's Lair summons of October 1944 to the failed assault on Malmedy on December 21 and the withdrawal on December 28. It covers the painted Panther tanks, the shortage of English speakers, the roadblock questions that caught Bradley and Clarke, the Eisenhower decoy at Versailles, the firing squads at Henri-Chapelle, and the 1947 trial at Dachau.
Built from after-action reports, unit records, casualty tables and the memoirs of the men who were there, with every figure checked against the record rather than the legend.
