Fun fact: the only reason that Dolly Parton is NOT a billionaire is because she donates so much to charity (in particular libraries and literacy programs)

Her dress looks like the Amazon equivalent of the Madame X gown, so he completely understood the assignment

The second I saw the ragebait title, I knew Abby was gonna cook, I am seated.

Surface level fashion history: Oh Madam X was scandalous.

Costume Historian: Hold my beer.

A first glance at the title seemed so out of place, it made me wonder if you were being held hostage. I was prepared to watch it while looking closely to see if your eyelids blinked SOS.
Thank you for reassuring us quickly.

Laura Sanchez's dress looks like a bridesmaid gown from a mid 2000s alt-rock wedding

The ugliness, wrong fit, wrong colour, ugly ass grommets etc ARE 100% DELIBERATE. After hearing the story of how the portrait ruined Madame X, what better was to show the world, that Madame B doesn't have any personal taste and doesn't know shit about fashion or art. BC it will have implications as to HER, but no long term consequences for the brand.
This is the hill I will die on.

As a vintage clothing collector for the past 40 years, it was like a knife through the heart to hear that dozens of 1920s through the 40s dresses were destroyed to create an ultra tacky "costume" for trailing up a flight of steps!

Also, it's pedantic AF, but in the painting is her right shoulder whose strap was slipping - yet ALL THREE homages have the left strap. It's like they looked at the painting and just mirrored what they saw rather than thinking half a step out and turn it around and actually step into the role

" There's no such thing as an ethical billionaire" SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BAAACK!!! There's too many people who still don't understand this.

the story of the madame x painting is so insane. just a bunch of horrible people being horrible to eachother. classically entertaining.

There is no excuse to destroy historical garments for that dress that Paloma wore. There are billions of garments in landfill that would have achieved the same effect. What is it about the rich wanting to destroy history...never forgotten the crime, 4 years ago, committed by KIM KARDASSIAN!!! and yes the reference is deliberate. And I loved the history lesson of Madame X. I had heard of it but as art isnt my thing, i wasnt sure of it. Thankyou for your deep dive! have a great holiday

I read a comment earlier this week: if billionaires paid the same effective tax as average people the arts wouldn't need to fundraise. It's a huge oversimplification, but it certainly made a good point.

Have I watched the met gala, ever? Nope. Do I watch Abby's reaction to the met gala every year? You better believe I do!

For this woman to be so proud that the inspo for her dress is a painting in the museum but to not educate herself on the full story is so embarrassing. It proves she doesn't actually care about the art, just the proximity to culture and good taste that she is trying to buy. Also as many people have said before, it's the same damn dress she wears to everything! She didn't even change her hair!

I knew this portrait, as originally painted, destroyed the sitter's reputation.

Whoever suggested Mrs Bezos wear it is a genius.

10:56 Thank you for pointing the black velvet bodice and satin gown, everyone who tried to replicate or reference this dress just went full silk/satin and called it a day. The pointed bodice not just at the shoulders but also below the waist, the lush saatin skirt with the train and the straps, ALL ot these components are what sell the beauty of the dress IMO, also Amelie is stunning in the portrait in that dress

Tell me you hate/ resent your client without saying you hate/ resent your client.

@sabrinawilhelm7964 4 months ago

History is full of men harming women of all classes. Sargent preyed on Amelie and then destroyed her when she turned out to not live up to the image he had in his head.
