Shane talking about history is so calming for some reason

"don't come in here" 😂😂😂

Shane asking his war vet uncle what it's like to kill a man and him replying with "fucking incredible" is wild 😂

The man in the black pajamas, dude. A worthy adversary.

1:05 “DAY ONE” bro that is the worst fucking luck

Grandpa was a Marine in Vietnam. Never talked about it with anyone in the family. When I came home on boot leave he drove 8 hours to come see me.

We sat on the back porch sipping coffee and he finally got to tell his stories. Fifty years is a long time to wait.

As a Vietnamese American, no we don’t hold hands. My dad, a 10 year re-education camp prisoner who escaped by boat, never even hugged me. True story

The funniest dudes in the world are also super aware and intelligent.....that's what makes them so fucking funny and accurate

12:00 talking about Dien Bien Phu without mentioning them walking the artillery up the mountain that the French thought would be impossible is a shame.

1/100 people being a sociopath or psychopath when we’re not at war and they’re walking around Walmart blows, but there’s a huge evolutionary advantage to having dudes out there on the battlefield today or out hunting lions thousands of years ago who are unable to feel fear, never make mistakes because of anxiety, never act out of emotion, that almost can’t be distracted by relationships back home, zero chance of ptsd, etc just 100% cold, emotionless efficiency.

Bro what? Colin quin and shane gillis no fuckin way

And never forget Australians made a indecipherable code in vietnam by just talking in their local lingo. Even the americans couldnt workout what they were saying and they were just talking normal on the radios. They american code breakers trying to workout what a tinny was while just talking about having beer when they got back to camp

America walked into a country experiencing a 20 year civil war in order to shake off the french Colony. America literally had no excuse to go to Vietnam and MacNamara introduced kill death ratios and created incentives for GIs to kill as many Vietnamese as possible, often just citizens and farmers.

Have one uncle who was an m60 gunner on the ground in Vietnam. Never once talked about it. Still alive, still see him. My other uncle was a marine who fought beside the Vietnamese militia in the mountains. Was one of the first companies to get the M16 (he said he hated it, wanted his m14 back). He said the militia wore necklaces of human ears and were drunk 24/7 on some drink they made. Totally crazy people but they were fierce soldiers. He was also shot in a fight the Marines lost and the Vietcong rolled him over, looted his pockets, and then moved on. He laid there expecting to get bayoneted but they didn't. He thinks they thought he was already dead. Lost his purple heart in a house fire. He passed away a few months ago. RIP Neal.

The craziest thing about Colonel Charlie beckwith is that he would then go on to found a Delta force. He actually wrote a book about it called Delta force, and this was kind of the first soirée into their public Spotlight.

Can’t believe Matt brought up Tich Naat Hahn. “Jesus and Buddah Together “ great book

Nothing wrong with loving your country, for his dad to do that, soldier or not. He loves his country.

I’ve been obsessed with Nam since 11 years old In 92. Bike to library for books n vhs

Everett Alvarez Jr. was the first American aviator shot down and captured in Vietnam.  The war hadn't officially been declared so he was placed in a Vietnam prison initially. He spent 8.5 years (3,113 days)(POW) in U.S. military history. However, he didn't hold the record for longest in captivity.  That title belonged to U.S. Army Colonel Floyd James Thompson at 3,278 days.  Alvarez said that they tortured them for 3 years to get them to convert to their ideology.  When they didn't work he said they tortured them for propaganda statements, letters and tapes.  He said he survived on thoughts of home, trust in his faith, and confidence in his country.  “It was a battle. You have got to hang on to your values, you have got to hang on to your ideals, you have got to hang on to, you know, you’re a member of a team, a group. Everybody was in this thing to keep resisting,” Alvarez said.  He stated that a finger-tapped communication code he and other prisoners used was a vital lifeline that fueled their morale and stiffened their backbone.  To cope, Alvarez created daily cleaning rituals, etched the passing days on walls and would mentally solve math problems.  After he focused on heavily on forward momentum.  He received a master degree in Operations Research and Systems Analysis.  He retied a Commander from the Navy in 1980 and obtained a law degrees in 1983.  In 1987, he started a management and military consulting firm, sold it 2002, opened an IT consulting firm in 2004 where he still serves as CEO today.  His hometown of Salinas, CA, named a high school after him in 1987 (didn't open until 1995), Everett Alvarez High School.
