That question of what is the value of a Black president if they have to mortgage their soul to get it made me feel.. deeply sad.

What makes Coates so special is his authenticity, thoughtfulness, and his clear intent to discuss these issues in good faith. Even when I disagree with him, it’s impossible not to respect his point of view, because of the qualities I mentioned above.

One of my favorite things is when Coates gets to turnaround and be the interviewer not just the interviewee in these things. It’s really something special

Thanks for speaking about this Ta-Nehisi. This is one of the things I don’t think most white ppls understand. I’m Native American, when I look back at the atrocities committed against black, brown, indigenous ppls, Asian ppls there is nothing in my soul that says or wants to get revenge by committing the same atrocities against white ppls. Atrocities are atrocities no matter who is inflicting or perpetrating them. Wanting to perpetuate harm onto another human being is wrong, period. U.S. soldiers used the butts of their rifles to hit indigenous moms and infants in their heads in order to save bullets during the so called "Indian wars”. Anyone wanting to inflict this same kind of barbarism on anyone needs some serious help for themselves and their traumas. I’ve heard white nationalists say "If POC (they used more colorful descriptive words to describe POC) ever outnumber us, they will do the same thing to us that we did to them”. Most POC, most human beings don’t ever think like this. This is something that truly needs to be studied, if it hasn’t already.

Love Dr Coates ❤. I'm his generation. Many of us have woken up at this point. Racism, empire building, exploitation are what fuel america.

America needs a truth and reconciliation commission

I deeply appreciate how Coates will spend so much time writing about a question, and not pretend he has all or any of the answers.

this why i f with the majority report...RIP Michael Brooks. dope interview

18:10 When Coates finishes talking about how oppressed peoples (using himself as an example) should not use (and should resist the temptation to use) that oppression as a badge to further oppression; he then asks "does that make sense?"
He then tells Sam and Emma to "please push".
That's a sign of someone engaged in a discussion that wants to go wherever the other participants want to go, even if it may seem difficult to talk about.
I have so much respect for that.

I love Ta-Nehisi Coates and I love interviews where he is asked really thoughtful questions and not just the kind of slop questions he gets asked on CBS. This was a great conversation

There is such a stark difference if the kind of journalism that Coates engages with versus the media talking heads and pundits we see on network news channels. He answers a question and follows it up by asking if his answer makes sense and then encourages Sam to push back. This speaks to a desire to have a real nuanced discussion that establishes common ground and understanding rather than pushing an agenda.

The Dutch and British "India Companies" sacked South Asia and committed genocide in North America,  United Fruit destroyed everything South of Mexico and Anglo-Persian Oil Company destabilized the entire Middle East. Mega-corporations have always had blood on their hands, and SO much of it.

Starting at 37:06 - I have made the SAME POINT to my students Coates.  I don’t want the Black face to be used as the face of U.S. imperialism (as crazy as it sounds) or that we should somehow feel proud of these Black faces in high U.S. places.  Glad to hear it from you.

It was so moving when Coates relayed that all of his education and experience led back to his father's living room.  Thanks for another great interview.

This is the most intellectual, honest and enlightening episode of Majority Report I have ever seen; and getting Sam’s perspective on being a 10 year old boy in Hebrew school is extremely interesting and delightfully revealing.

15:17 "Immigrant group after immigrant group, coming from Europe and duplicating oppression even as they flee from it." Yep. It started in fact with the very first immigrant group that came to flee oppression: the Pilgrims. Who were... really awful.

Only Mamdani was brave enough to cross the line that she did not dare cross

I just love how honest Coates is. Never holds back when disagreeing and sharing his true opinion.

There has never been a time in my 47 years on this earth. That the US hasn't demonize a place or people. There's always some one to punch down on.

The thing I love about him is that he is thinking while talking, not just speaking ready talking points. It's amazing to have access to the raw thinking process.
