I bought a bore scored Porsche Boxster S a few months ago at auction. I ended up getting a brand new second hand engine from eBay which was fitted and has been a great success.

But what should I do with the old engine, and what does bore score look and feel like in person?

Paul, get yourself a real breaker bar. Putting a pipe on the one you have is effective to get you out of a pinch, but there's a shoulder or back injury or a finger about to get degloved in your future if you keep relying on it. A quality bar is quite long and very strong. Gives you loads of leverage with confidence.

So interesting to see the actual depth of the score. Like on the videos I've seen you can see it but really does not give that physical representation like the move of the piston did. Don't think I've ever seen someone show how much play was actually in that piston.

All the Porsche engines that are susceptible to bore scoring is a bit of a hit and miss affair with many never having then problem. I believe a lot of it is how the car has been driven in its early life. High revs in a cold engine promotes wear and some drivers can be called( in old fashion terms) "all clog and anchor" they have to show off.

Never get tired of watching an engine strip down ! . Thanks for stripping it down with good footage. Re tools I’ve collected similar e Torx sets inc some e Torx spanner’s which are also great !. Power ratchet I use all the time !. I’d probably go hartech if it were me as that is a re sellable known quality and could go up in capacity, performance etc. I think doing as much as you can diy may help others, bore scoring isn’t going away !. Great video again. Digital torque wrench on my shopping list !

Very intersting have been looking at 986 boxster's. I am on a huge learning curve right now. One I liked had no smoke, drove really well but the main concern was the 2024 engine testing. The compression figures were reasonably even at 130 / 130 / 130 / 120 / 120 / 110 psi, but the leak-down results were 30% / 23% / 21% on cylinders 1–3, compared with 8% / 12% / 12% on cylinders 4–6. The report also specifically noted Bank 1 blow-by.
Some are telling me to take a punt (its a cheap price) some are telling me to walk away as the engine is on its way out!
