I'm in my 60s and never got rid of my VHS or DVD collections ,I can see the re -appeal of a tactile film and if you plan an eighties night ,the VHS player and tapes are a must.
People are sick of being nickel & dimmed by streaming services. It’s not just nostalgia. DVD is making an impressive comeback as well (not that it was ever gone). I cancelled ALL of my streamer’s & went back to DVD about a year ago. I have amassed quite a collection. It’s also a very specific collection. Only 80s movies. There’s just something about the films of that era. The back catalogue is immense. The best part is there’s no waiting for the newer formats to release something you really want. Better still is I’m not just collecting. I’m also watching & enjoying my discs. No internet required.
they need to bring back block buster i miss the days going to the video rental stores looking for good movie and games im old af you want to fight about it
I've actually still got an extensive VHS collection - Dr Who, Star Trek, James Bond, all the major blockbusters of the golden age of the late 70s through early 2000s, and yes a fully working machine to play them on. For me, it's partly that there are unique versions of the movies on VHS - sometimes even movies you still can't buy in any other format - and partly it's the obvious nostalgia of watching the versions of movies I remember actually watching growing up, pan & scan picture and all. Icing on the cake is finding off-air tape recordings at a thrift shop or rummage sale. There's something incredibly cool about finding someone's tape they recorded off the air in 1992, with all the commercial breaks and news programs and live TV and whatever else have you. It's like a time capsule into the past. There's literally nothing else quite like it. Do I think it's better than the latest digital stuff? Of course not, I can't reasonably argue that it is. But VHS tapes definitely still have their place in 2026. I'd die on that hill.
i got a Sony VHS / DVD combo in a thrift store for 13 bucks in perfect condition around 3 years ago, since then i started to collect movies on DVD (i already have around 400 ) and VHS (i have around 50 and counting....). i really love to watch my DVD's as many times as i wanted with all extras, bloopers, making of, delete scenes etc...things that modern platforms don't offer you, just the movie and available until they decide to take it away from you.....watching my movies on a CRT is an amazing experience.... i saw your copy of ''the 6TH day behind you, i was actually watching it last week, love that movie.
I beat the curve.. years ago whenever I saw a VHS player with the original remote at a thrift store I always picked it up often for just $5 bucks. These days VHS players are slightly difficult to find but I just scored a Super VHS player last week for $8 bucks... I'm glad the store and employees had no idea what Super VHS players sell for. 😅
VHS was the last format where the term Movie Magic" actually has teeth. Knowing that major studios could make humans walk in air or summon lightning bolts... perhaps live 1,000 years into the future. All things real life cannot do. The character Harry Trimble from The Majestic said it best. "All your problems are out there but on the screen, is where the magic is". Now we can do all those things on our pocket computers... for a subscription price
