Can I just say that I for one really appreciate that you put fun clips of media throughout your video? Seeing the home videos, old commercials, etc, adds a ton of fun to your videos. Thanks for all you do!
Those cheap Magnavox DVD/VHS players were sold in Big Lots and even drugstores like Rite Aid to help sell remaining inventory of VHS movies in stock. I remember seeing Dodgeball, Shrek 2, and some anime on VHS in the mid to late 2000s.
My parents' Funai VCR ate two of my video cassettes. Each time they brought it to the repair man, he blamed the cassette for being old and threw the cassette out instead of returning it to me. The third time it happened, I opened up the VCR myself to remove the cassette. And after that, I bought a Sony VCR for myself and never had any issues with the "old" tapes.
I'm not sure they were "too cheap" to include some of the features. At this point a TV tuner & record facility wasn't something people wanted out of a VCP/DVD player, so they were removing those features so they could reduce the cost, which meant a lower price for customers.
At least they were honest about calling it a "player" instead of a recorder. The lack of stereo sound for the VCP does suck, but if someone was buying a DVD-VCP combo that cost under 50 bucks, they probably didn't care about it that much to begin with.
i wanted to drop in and say that the continuous, still shot of your TV playing this footage is awesome. the bezel just barely showing around the edges with the speaker grilles on either side. a screengrab of this would look pretty great if used as a frame when emulating games or watching 4:3 content. thanks for the cool videos
Hey if it's cheap and it works then I can't argue with that. Plenty of people out there probably never hit the record button on their VCR anyway. Thanks for another great video.
About a month ago, i picked up 4 Sylvania DV220SL8 VCR/DVD player. The seller on facebook/Marketplace was selling these units used at an elementary school for $25.00 So i took a chance since he had not tested any of them. I figured at least one would work. My purpose was transferring my old band VHS tapes to digital. To my surprise 3 out of the 4 players, worked flawlessly! The 4th players had the DVD player working, but on the VCR side it was eating the tape. Before testing MY TAPES, i went to a local church thrift store and bought 3 VHS tapes for 50 cents each. I believe the 4th VCR eating the tape, probably needs the Mode switch cleaned, which i will do at another time. So far i have sold two of the three Sylvania DV220SL8 players for $20.00 a piece.
I finally recongized the interface of the DVD player we had twenty years ago! In fact, it was also made by Funai, model DVP-5000 released in 2004. It was entirely made of plastic and incredibly light. Like ours, your unit should play Audio CDs over the blue background screen without anything fancy such as... a track list.
We had one just like this, no tuner, cable out, no cable in. No way to record, play only. In 1987, we had a VCR, taped lots of movies over the air. And wed have a friend bring their VCR over and wed copy movies. Most VHS tapes didn't have copy guard back then
Interesting that you posted this today as I just picked up a weird Magnavox DVD player that does DVD recording to a built in HDD today at a thrift store for $7. I'm actually excited to fool around with it.
