I grew up in the South where these are so popular, but I wasn't aware of them when I was a kid (thankfully, it wasn't something my parents were interested in). When my daughter was a baby, I was approached a couple of times by people who claimed they were pageant scouts and wanted to help me get started. That freaked me out soooo much, because what kind of person is going around thinking "that baby would look great dressed up like a 25 year old"?!

When Laci was missing, her mother wasn't concerned that she may be lost, or worried that her child had been abducted by a predator. No, mom was just worried that Laci was in danger of missing the beauty segment of the pageant. These parents are obviously living vicariously through their their children.

So the little girl with the cigarette is from my home town. Believe me when I tell you this, no one was okay with her mom and them doing that to that baby. Also I was a pageant child. I hated it so much and I would purposefully frown and act in a bad mood on stage so I’d lose! Lmao my mom hated it!

this show is literally just parents exploiting and forcing beauty standards on their children so they can fill the emptiness in their unfulfilled lives. your children are human beings, not barbie dolls.

I'm from the states and HATE child beauty pageants. There is something so off about them.

As someone who actually went to one of these, it's so messed up. I remember walking on that stage and men would whistle, approvingly for us girls, and before I went back wearing a swimsuit the women who was there told me something similar too "to flirt. Make them like you"

A really sad but really important clip is the twins Ainsley and Breanne. The mom favors one so heavily over the other - the only good news is that the father now has sole custody of both girls and they stopped doing pageants.

I saw an interview of a pageant mum and her daughter. The mum was like: 'she likes competing, it teaches her to be confident and how to speak and public', and all that nonsense that these women tell themselves to be able to justify this child abuse. And then the host turned to the girl (she was maybe 6 years old): Would you rather be pretty or smart? Pretty - replied the girl without any hesitation. The mother started giggling nervously and said: yes, but being smart is also important, isn't it? The child just looked confused.
This shows what do they really teach these children: that good looks is everything, that beauty equals material value because you win cash and savings bonds and the biggest glittery crown.

My dad dated a woman whose daughter was a well known pageant baby. It’s actually why he ended up leaving her, she literally did not care about the safety of her daughter. She was just living vicariously through her daughter and the money they won just made her feel it was okay to do it. 😩 She would only talk about her daughter in a physical way, never anything emotional. Very disturbing.

As a parent, this literally made me want to cry! Pageants are exploration, they teach children that other girls are competition. Hearing adults call children hot and seductive makes me physically sick to my stomach. Stop sexualizing children 😭

To the mom who said “Sandy was a good girl and she didn’t smoke either”, the difference was Sandy was an ADULT. Olivia Newton John was 29 and her character was a senior so at least 17 or 18z. You can’t compare that to a 4 year old prancing around with a cigarette.
