Gracie Jiu Jitsu at one time was only a self-defense system, then it expanded. Those complaining about Rickson "not understanding sport jiu jitsu" obviously don't know who he is and never saw him compete. Go look up his fights. The self-defense aspect of BJJ is not being taught as widely as it used to. Rickson is doing what he can to bring back self-defense to those who have lost it or were never taught it. This is to be applauded not resisted.
This is real jiujitsu. One of the most dangerous things I’ve seen in my bjj journey has been with the implementation of rules. For example imagine you have an opponent in a triangle and the opponent picks you up to slam you. In tournament for safety purposes they don’t allow it and so people start to become accustomed to not taking precautions such as when you have the triangle and you feel the opponent start to posture to pick you up you should do one of two things. If you decide you are committed to the triangle you should immediately capture the opponents ankles or leg to disrupt their ability to slam. The second is release your triangle completely. Either way you choose to prevent being slammed. Because in the street there is no ref and being slammed can be very unforgiving.
Absolute gold! A true maestro. You just feel that his only motivation is to help, to teach. No promotion of any school, no self promotion. To use a foreign language so intelligently, selecting precise words gets all of my respect without knowing about his fighting record. Rickson is mankind's spiritual leader. Thank you for posting this.
When master Rickson demonstrated breathing for calming down , it was like the whole room calmed. Even I felt it just watching. That is a guy with a great presence as well as being a great teacher.
I am new to Jiu-Jitsu, but Rickson is the reason I began to practice the art. He also continues to be my biggest influence besides my Professor. Respect Rickson! Oss!!!
I absolutely love this video, the way Rickson explains self defence Concepts is mind blowing. I trained BJJ at a school called Toronto BJJ which has roots with Gracie JiuJitsu. The professor there (which is what we call the head black belt instructor) made it a point that we trained self defence BJJ in addition to modern competition JiuJitsu. He, like Rickson, believed that BJJ is a self defence martial art and that students needed to know how to defend themselves in addition to learning competition JiuJitsu.
One other thing, Notice how Rickson is pulling students from the crowd to demonstrate his techniques. It takes 100 percent confidence in what you’re showing to pull unprepared students to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique for you with basic instruction.
@Rickson, it's not enough that the community finds this stuff on YouTube by chance, you need to get on with documenting the techniques in high quality video, with the level of commentary, narration and philosophy shown here. It would be almost a crime to lose this knowledge and perspective on jiu jitsu without documenting it in one place.
