He was named St Louis Man Of The Year and yet Elston doesn't have a ⭐ in the St Louis Walk of Fame. Elston was the 2nd best catcher to come out of St Louis.
We got our first black and white tv in 59 when I was 5 and my hero's where Yogi, Elston and Mickey and then the rest of the Yankee's. Later Thurman was moved into fourth place. But god, what a history of talent that has played on that team through the last 100 years. To this day, that white with black pinstripe uniform is the best looking one in baseball. Thanks for all the great memories.
I am 72 years old and a life long Yankee Fan! My father took my brother to the first Yankee Bat day! The bat I got had Elston Howard’s autograph! I was thrilled!
In "Driving Mr. Yogi" After the Yankee's beat the Dodgers in the World Series, during the celebration in the clubhouse Reggie asked "where do I rank in history in the Yankee outfield?" Elston Howard answered sharply "4TH outfielder." Yogi stood there and grinned.
Thank you so much for this excellent video. As a kid living outside New York in the 50s and 60s, I saw Elston Howard along with the other team members, Mantle, Berra, Richardson, Boyer, Ford, etc. I never knew much more about his than that he was the Yankee's catcher, and that he was at the time, the only black player on the team. I wish I had better understood his baseball skills, his quiet strength and influence on both teams he played for, and how much his teammates appreciated him. Now I do thanks to this video. What a shame that he was not chosen to succeed Ralph Houk.
He might not have been the greatest catcher in the history of MLB. He excelled at every thing he did as a major League ball player. Above average arm was a great defensive catcher and an adequate corner outfielder A steady offensive player. Best of all he was one of the greatest teammates and a team player
Buck O'Neil made history on May 29, 1962, when the Chicago Cubs hired him, making him the first African American coach on an active Major League Baseball (MLB) staff
In 1973 in Lawrence Township, NJ Elston Howard cam e to speak at the Babe Ruth-Little League banquet. I asked him two questions, " Who was the better catcher Thurman Munson or Carlton Fisk!? " His reply, " Well I know they donot like each other! " I got a Yankee Yearbook autographed that I don't have anymore, but I asked him another question, " What happened to Matty Alou?" and all he said was " He was traded to St Louis! "
