My hero ......and an even bigger hero at the end of his life. I know many older guys cried the day he died I did. I took a T shirt and painted 7 on it that day. I was 40 yrs old ....Mickey was our Mickey ....and he hoped at the end people would say he did ok. Mickey you did GREAT!
my freaking idol growing up in NYC in the 1960s. he was god. jeez look at the size of that bat. it's like a Ruthian 54 oz!. in 1968 there was really only one kind of base ball card..topps. you couldn't get a mantle all year. then suddenly in 1969, there were 2 mickeys in every pack (probably because he announced his retirement) I had a shoebox full of "doubles". man imagine how much they would be worth today. he was the man. one of the most likable and great players ever. imagine his numbers if he didn't hurt his leg his rookie yr 51. wow
The man could hit with power from either side of the plate; he could play his position, steal bases, hit for average, knock in RBIs.....he could do it all.......THE BEST ALL AROUND BASEBALL PLAYER I'VE EVER SEEN IN THE LAST 65 YEARS AND HE DID IT ALL ON ALCOHOL !
Btw, I wear #77 on all my baseball shirts. #77 is #7 doubled. Obviously, it's also in my screen name. I watched the Mick live for $.50-1.00 as a 5-year old. 10-20 cents each way on the #4 El, 50 cents bleachers. Less if I eluded either turnstile!
