School Swap: Korea Style follows three British teenagers as they swap their teachers and parents for the intense world of South Korean education.

Tommy, Ewan and Sarah spend three days immersed in school life in Seoul, experiencing long school days, after-school study and private night classes that can run until 10pm. The boys attend one of Seoul’s top schools, while Sarah faces strict rules at an all-girls’ school.

But South Korea’s highly competitive education system comes at a price. As the teenagers discover the extraordinary academic pressure placed on pupils, the film explores what Britain could learn from Korea’s schools — and the darker consequences of a system where educational success can come at a huge personal cost.

Definitely think Korea needs to focus more on mental health. Koreans are incredibly hardworking and smart so imagine how much more successful they'll be with a healthy mentality. Although the British education system is not the best, I was grateful for how open we are about mental health and the support you can get for it and being taught the importance of balancing studying/work and life in general. If both education systems learn something from each other, it'll be a pretty great education system.

This is all an old system. South Korea government has been making changes to both the school hours and work hours. Schools hours last no more than about 8 hours, like other countries. Work hours are very similar, its all being shortened to make priority for mental and physical health.

A fascinating documentary, thank you. Just a couple of small points, Sarah's Korean housemate's name is pronounced Shi-on, not Si-on. Koreans don't pronounce si (시) as si, it's always pronounced shi. The SAT is called Suneung in Korean and CSAT in English, not KSAT. It stands for College Scholastic Ability Test.

I feel that at minimum we should have more tutoring/after school support for kids

I wonder if we would think differently if it were physical exercise and the students were training for a physical test, not unlike the Olympics. Would we be as understanding of the commitment that these students and parents exert for the event? Do we admire athletes who sacrifice for their peak performance?

The behaviour of the Korean kids(especially toward their teachers), compared to the behaviour of British kids is embarrassing.

I hope that the students got to see the city and enjoy the nightlife, hiking, and good food.

This documentary is very good, it shows the truth to Our education in Britain and how it needs help. And how difficult Korean education is. it's very formal thank you, it should have way more views. 14 hours is crazy 😅

Here the high school locally starts 7:45 till 2:12 with a recess break. HS is from Grade 9-12, and students have to take the Regent Exams during the four years. The Regents are given twice a year, and students can retake any exams they do not do well in. After school, there are Advance Academic Programs and after school activities, usually some sports. Most school students also take the SAT or AP national exams for college entry. Those are held on Saturdays 1-2x a year.

Korean kids study till 10 pm because parents and schools make them - it’s really simple. BUT: It’s never about APPLYING all that knowledge! That’s why they suck at English: They KNOW the Grammar, they KNOW the vocabulary, but they never learned to apply it, to form sentences, to properly speak it. And that goes for almost every subject they have…

this was so informative, thank you

YET - despite all of that, Korea has NEVER won a Nobel - EVER! Those folks are just afflicting themselves to become good standardized test takers, nothing more.
