Day in the Life of a Japanese Marine High School Student

A day in the life of a Japanese high school student at Miyazaki Marine High School. Unlike a typical school in Japan, Yuma studies Marine Resources and Environmental Management, learning about marine life, ocean environments, fish farming, and even professional diving.
With over 76 years of history and around 210 students, this Japanese maritime high school offers specialized courses in marine navigation, engineering, environmental science, and marine food science. Yuma’s first class is Sogo Jisshu, or Integrated Studies, where today he’s studying fish farming. Students identify real world problems, research possible solutions, and eventually present their findings, developing practical problem solving skills for their future careers.
Around 80 percent of students at the school enter the workforce directly after graduation, so Japanese school life here places a strong emphasis on hands on training. Students can even earn professional qualifications while still in high school. In Yuma’s course, that includes a commercial diver’s license and small vessel operator’s license.
High school life in Japan can also mean a much longer commute. While younger Japanese students typically attend neighborhood schools, high school students have fewer schools to choose from, with many commuting by train each morning to attend specialized programs like Yuma’s.

We need a day in the life of Yuma's mom. That lady is the real MVP

@chikchikadee 3 days ago

Yuma was pretty stoic the entire time EXCEPT when he was on the water. I've never seen a kid smile so genuinely. His parents are doing him right for sending him to that school, for sure. I wish him all the best! He seems to have such a bright future ahead.

@Birdygal 12 days ago

He says he doesn’t talk to his sisters much, but the hand holding with his little sister melts my momma heart ❤

Specialized high school is such a foreign and cool concept to me! What a lucky dude to be able to pursue career interests so early in schooling

@Kamikaze_254 13 days ago (edited)

Damn, six kids in this economy. Mad respect to the parents.

"You don't talk to your sister?" "Of course, not!" 😂

@folkrap12 12 days ago

The mom and dad seem so chill

I hope he realizes how fortunate he is to have such supportive parents and a great family. Seems like a decent kid. All the best to him in his future pursuits. That aside, what a great school -- I wish there were more practical high schools like that globally.

Yuma like typical Japanese high school anime protagonist😅.

@Risalette2 13 days ago

Can't believe they can do so much in one day, fishery, pilotting ships, agriculture, diving, all in one day, with 2+ hours commuting.

@REDWOLF763 13 days ago

i admire Yumas mom, she is a super hero being able to take care of all of them!

Nice to see a big family from Japan, they need it more.

If my local High school, when I was in high school, had something like this, I would have jumped into the boat. I love the ocean life. I took culinary arts and commercial foods in High school to earn a degree. I graduated high school with both a high school diploma and a trade school degree. I love watching videos like this because they show schools, even in other countries, how far they have come in 18 years since I graduated from High school. I remember the long days going from High school to my trade school and home.

My cousin used to attend this school! He always told me how much fun he had doing the boat excursions, it made me feel a bit jealous! It’s been years since he graduated, but this was such a wonderful look into what it would have been like to attend this school.
