if you are planning to stay long term in Jakarta but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city center while retaining the quality of life and entertainment i suggest looking for apartments or housing in the south tanggerang / lippo karawaci area. its satellite city of Jakarta developed for residential and commercial district. the rent of apartment / house is more or less cheaper than Jakarta with high standard of living. night life is also quite good with many of people living in the areas are middle upper class and some expats especially Japanese and Korean.
if you are looking for more authentic Javanese experience you can look to settle in Jogjakarta or Malang. it is more laid back and much slow paced compared to Jakarta.
