once back in the early eighties ( many moons ago, during the war as uncle Albert would say. Lol ) I helped a old mechanic free up a seized engine , a old WW2 maybach panzer engine and to free up the pistons he boiled up light engine oil, and poured it into the pots , he had heated up the pots first before pouring it in. This was after soaking them in oil overnight , tapping the pistons down with a lump of wood etc and finding them barely moving . He then said let’s try this old method he had been told about. The stuff was bubbling hot when he poured it in but boy did it work, I think with the combination of heat and oil it expanded the metal and thinned the oil enough to penetrate everything ,after leaving to soak and cool down slowly it got it freed up. This then allowed him to fully strip down the entire engine right down to the last nut and bolt. The one thing that I took away from helping him was that, patience. Take your time and if something doesn’t work at first, step back or move on to something else then go back to it with fresh eyes and a fresh mind. And do your homework.

I found your channel a few weeks ago Dom and have binged all the playlists in that time. You’ve inspired this 42 year old man to start a new hobby! Welder on the way and garage sort out underway to make space. ❤

A brilliant tip form Alan Millyard for dealing with gunged-up spark plugs: heat the tip with a blow-torch till it glows red for a few seconds, leave to cool-down & Bob's your Uncle clean spark plugs. An old tip for freeing up stuck pistons; heat-up some old oil (engine oil/ATF/gear-oil/All 3) until it's really hot & pour it into the cylinders. The heat will expand the cylinders & the oil will lube it all up.

I anticipate finding out what you are up to each week with joy. And then it’s finished in the blink of an eye!  This is now my fav show.

Liberty design allows for swapping cylinder positions to put the exhausts outboard of the Vee with the carbs inside. Few V-8s were ever built. More than the I-4 or I-6 configuration but the vast majority were V-12s. Great to see one being brought back to life. There is extensive technical info from the designer/builders available as it was a major US Army undertaking and they had to justify the huge sums of money spent. It was the first government funded aircraft engine project; designed in less than a week in a Washington DC hotel room by chief engineers from Packard & Hall-Scott. Also, a long soak in a mixture of molasses and water will remove that rust. Residue is completely safe for use as a soil enricher.

Very interesting project. As a young man, I was a pit mechanic for a dirt track car. I got tired of seeing the driver get tangled up with other cars in the corners so, while the car was loitering in my dad's shop during the off season, dad and I took 14 inches off the wheelbase. I knew the owner-driver's reaction would be tempered by the fact that he was laying low while taking advantage of my dad. The next season, the car 'miraculously' stopped molesting the other cars.

Jennings Motorsport has good luck with freeing SUPER old engines with acetone/ATF mix. The stuff he gets running, you wouldn't believe!

I’ll throw this out there.. but as an older guy I’ve seen how projects can grow “so big” you never get them done. I wouldn’t be opposed to cutting the motor down, but I’m wondering if you might be better to get the car together with the 12.. keep the ass end short ( chain drive ?) and get on the track.. find out how it works get some seat time and then in the off-season if it’s not working out, shorten the car up. It seems to be the way a lot of race cars have gone over the years. The motor is relatively light, probably in the neighborhood of Chrysler hemi, maybe a bit lighter with all that aluminum. I’m running 400 horse with a small block Chevy in a ‘32 Ford with a transmission that was made for 85 horse and skinny tires. The car probably weighs something like 1800 pounds and yes I can destroy all the running gear right off the line if I’m stupid.. but if I roll into the power, holy crap does it go… way better than 200 hp. Anyway just a thought. Oh the Hot Rodder and designer in me loves the exhaust coming up the middle and carbs hanging out to the side… goddamn that’ll look cool!

The good thing with all the variable things you do ie. Grass cutting ,engine strip, gutter clean etc., is it gives mind and body balance and if it takes a while to getting back to an engine rebuild etc., you can go back watch your video's to refresh your memory, thanks for all your hard graft, insight and enthusiasm😊
