Absolutely amazing project

I agree with everyone saying dont cut the engine down. Do try to fit the V12 in as sympathetically as you can. I think you’ve got plenty of room for all 12 cylinders.

I've sincerely listened to all your arguments, by the way I'm an aero engineer, and sure it's not such a rare piece nor in the best condition or something for a museum and there are some good points for the car dynamics of wheight, but still I honeslty think you're not doing yourself any favour by cutting the engine: even just restoring it is not easy fit, but trying to balance something that big (even though it's not high revving) might prove nearly impossible especially if the factory itself with all its know-how and capabilities left the idea after making just a few v8; also maybe it won't make for the fastest cornering car but still a v12 is more fascinating, and it's far easier to workaround the mass distribution with the placing of the engine on the chassis and the rest of the car in general that it is to fiddle with an engine of that displacement. Finally yes without you it would've end up as blob of rust but I think that even a commen engine of 100 years deserves to be kept as original as possible

Don't cut the engine, Dom. You'll have a world of grief trying to get it to balance, and risk breaking your crankshaft, from torsional vibrations, with catastrophic results.  Ditto camshaft.

PLEASE reconsider leaving it a V12. The though of all 12 of those cylinders cackling away with a row of carbs in the center & the exhaust headers belching flames out both sides makes me giddy as a schoolboy!! 😁

Very enjoyable show. Shame to hear about Julian, he’ll be missed. I also recommended not cutting the engine down but it is your project. That said, you will need to address the very basic problem of the Liberty V8, its inherent imbalance. The 45° cylinder angle and unbalanced crankshaft made them “vibrate horribly, like a paint shaker” and was the reason very few were made. You might check with the VSCC on whether you could use a counterbalanced crank. It would be a shame to make an inferior engine out of one of the few Libertys left.

I also agree with all the comments saying don't cut the engine down. The crank  is designed to balance the pattern of 12  pistons and connecting rods moving in and out in a V formation. If you take 4 sets out the remaining 8 sets will be totally out of balance and the vibration will be destructive.

As someone used to working on 60s engines, I'm very impressed by how relatively easily that engine came apart. That's some real quality there. FWIW, I do not think you should cut that engine down. I believe if you do, you will come to regret it.

RIP Julian Grimwade, a great supporter of vintage motoring, Brooklands and the VSCC. He will be greatly missed.

Hi Dom, did you miss an opertunity at Chelsea? The metal guy said he made the stems for his ferns out of sheet and rolled them into a Taper? Didn't your cooling system have a damaged tapered water pipe that you wondered how you would replace? Looking good so far. Regards Richard Suffolk

The bolts used on the brackets you removed from the frame are called 'nib bolts'. They are still available, mainly from India. but maybe only in metric sizes. These bolts only require a drill for the hole and a file for the notch to install.

Dom, you are picking up some very valuable information from people far more knowledgeable than you about this engine, with all due respect to you and what you are doing, please listen to them and leave the lovely V12 in one piece, it is far more important than the chassis, alter that to accommodate the engine.  That's my opinion anyway.

Dom, don't do it!  Don't cut off those four cylinders.   Aero engined cars are about MORE displacement, not less.   Extend the chassis to fit the engine!

I don't mind seeing flowers, anything you get up to is enjoyable to watch!
