When Ray cried in the final episodes, I suddenly cried while watching him. I didn't realize how locked into his story I was, until then.

I knew a guy who Ray reminded me of so much I almost gave up on this series it was eerie, even kinda looked like him. Old school bikie, grew up in the MC and was in and outta jail most of his life until his wife passed way too young and he stepped back because he didn't want his kid in the foster system - he had been in himself, had no other family. Still was a bit of a rouge but, could be really kind and generous. Crazy strong work ethic and self employed in at least a dozen different (legal and illegal) ways at any given point. Real rigid code, if he decided you were worth his respect he would go to the ends of the earth with you, if you weren't he would not let you have the luxury of believing otherwise.
He was my neighbor when I was a young nerdy scientist, I always assumed more of a gap but just life, prison and meth were not kind to him. No problems but not a lot to do with eachother until one day he just out of the blue told me all about his wife getting cancer, palliative care etc just out of the blue - I later found out that he told me things he hadn't told anyone else. One of the few times I saw genuine grief, others were around his son or
I had also seen him in a handful of fights, road rage, people mistreating children or animals. Someone bashed my mother, he took the guy to the middle of the state forest here and let him have it and then left him there, guy lived to be a fuckwit again another day though. Lots more stories I heard from him or the other guys from his MC about him. All in all, good bloke, good father and I am lucky to have know him. Even stared down the barrels of a terminal cancer without breaking a sweat, genuinely I think he was kinda surprised he made it as long as he did.

Ray was desensitized by war. He went and fought in a war he didn’t choose against people he had no issue with. But, he had to kill just the same. He explains this in session. Violence is ok when the perception is different.
He says there’s no difference between shooting a man from another country you don’t know cuz if you don’t he’ll kill you, and being paid for a hit. The one time he gets emotional is when his boss orders a hit on the wrong guy. And tries to stop it too late….and ray ended up killing an innocent father and husband.

He went into a rage and destroyed the mark she put on the tree, after she fled from him in the grocery store in S2E6, so he does have emotional outbursts

You know, there was a single time in the show I recall him really losing his shit, and that’s when his friend’s daughter got snatched up. He certainly wasn’t himself and/or calm about anything involving that situation, but you’re right I think. That’s it.

You can do some Ted Lasso next. Is he somebody to aspire to be like? While he has a lot of issues, his overall impact on the people around him is the most positive thing in movie and TV history. It would be nice if you can analyze a few people that we can aspire to be like, who score high on all the positive traits.
