The Harry Potter movies showed us Lord Voldemort—but barely showed us the family that created Tom Riddle. His story actually begins generations earlier with the House of Gaunt: descendants of Salazar Slytherin and Cadmus Peverell who went from wizarding royalty to poverty, violence, and near extinction.
In today’s Hogwarts lesson, we uncover Voldemort’s entire family history—from Marvolo, Morfin, and Merope Gaunt to Tom Riddle Senior, the love potion that led to Voldemort’s birth, his childhood at Wool’s Orphanage, and the murders that erased both sides of his family. We’ll also uncover how the Resurrection Stone ended up inside a Horcrux—and why Voldemort spent his entire life hiding the truth about his own blood.

The Gaunts are direct descendants from Cadmus Peverell. He was the brother of Ignotus Peverell, ancestor of the Potters. We know Voldemort was related to the gaunts, therefore the Peverells, meaning that Harry and Voldemort are distant relatives.
