What happens when standard polyamory advice was never built for the way your nervous system actually works?
For autistic people, people with ADHD, and other neurodivergent adults, common ethical non-monogamy advice can create more strain instead of helping. Real-time emotional processing, spontaneous schedule changes, weekly relationship check-ins, constant verbal communication, and juggling multiple partners’ needs can all assume a level of executive function, sensory capacity, and verbal processing that simply isn’t universal.
In Season 2, Episode 8 of Untamed Ember, Dr. Misty explores neurodivergence, polyamory, and ethical non-monogamy, including what changes when autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, masking, executive function, and rejection sensitivity enter the relationship.
We’re talking about:
• Why “just communicate more” isn’t neutral advice
• How autistic communication can differ during emotional activation
• How ADHD executive function affects scheduling and relationship check-ins
• Why sensory overload matters in polyamorous relationships
• How masking can follow neurodivergent people into ENM communities
• The difference between rejection sensitivity and jealousy
• Why written communication can work better than immediate verbal processing
• How predictable structure can support neurodivergent relationships
• Why recovery time between dates and difficult conversations matters
• How stimming, movement, and avoiding eye contact can support regulation during hard conversations
• How partners and metamours can make room for different access needs
• Why accommodations aren’t a lesser way of doing non-monogamy
Through the story of Jules and Robin, we look at what happens when someone stops forcing themselves to follow the standard polyamory playbook and starts designing their relationships around the nervous system they actually have.
The goal of communication is mutual understanding and emotional safety. The method, written or verbal, immediate or delayed, structured or spontaneous, should fit the people actually using it.
Your relationship doesn’t have to look like the version of polyamory you see modeled online to be healthy, ethical, or deeply connected.
