Laini Taylor has a fantasy series called Daughter of Smoke and Bone published 2011. đđ Book of Mac & Cheese titles have been part of the publishing industry for decades.
I think she's just learning the hard way how little creative control an author has when their work is getting adapted. Before Paramount, Disney optioned her book and she was bragging how she turned it down because she wanted all this control (lead writer, etc.). Mind you, she had zero experience with script writing, and so we never got a Disney adaptation.
Paramount agreed to her requirements, which is super rare for someone so new into the publishing and Hollywood business, and I think she learned the hard way how much an adaptation is just that: an adaptation.
'Noun of Noun and Noun" is an INCREDIBLY common title format in fantasy, to the point where I actually rolled my eyes at hearing 'Children of Blood and Bone' without knowing a single thing about it but the title, so I'm not sure why the author would be so quick to claim IP infringement on that subject.
Idk I havenât read the book but I am Nigerian (Igbo) I think this would have been a wonderful opportunity to have a Nigerian actor or at least Nigerian-American/Nigerian-british/nigerian-Canadian etc. actor play the main lead. I get u gotta sell tickets but Harry Potter had an at the time unknown/barely known main lead actors, I think the approach shouldâve been an unknown but talented lead that actual fits the character description from the book since her appearance has plot relevance and then stack the supporting cast with well known/famous/a list actors. Like how sinners did.
Idk the author kinda confuses me tho, but colorism and Nigerians almost go hand in hand atp lol. I mean someone in my family owns a successful skin bleaching brand saur
im begging y'all to put your money in a local credit union and not an online only bank. credit unions are cooperative, member owned, and transparent, and usually have programs that actively benefit your communities.
What a missed opportunity. Not only did they miss out portraying a dark skinned black woman, who are criminally underrepresented. But according to that character description, they also missed out on possibly portraying a more plus size woman? Hollywood loves to just use plus size women as the butt of jokes, and it would have been so nice to see some positive representation. :/
i also think part of the strength of the backlash to amandla stenbergâs casting in particular is because this is not the first time she specifically has gotten backlash for taking a role that many believe should have gone to a darker actress.
No Puerto Ricans in West Side Story, no Egyptians in the Gods of Egypt, no Greeks in the Odyssey, no Poles in the Witcher, no Nigerians in Children of Blood and Bone. It's a feature, not a bug
As someone who has family involved in the writing side of the film industry, this is my prediction on what happened with Tomi and the movie: Hollywood generally doesn't really value the creators of IP. They want to adapt books, video games, etc. because there's a proven market and money to be made, but they don't usually have much respect for the people who created the thing in the first place. As far as they see it, the original creator stopped being relevant the second Hollywood acquired the rights to the IP. It's why so many adaptations are so far off from the original source material--and why so many creatives have spoken about how much they disliked the adaptation of their work.
With regards to Tomi, from the way she was originally speaking about the movie, it seemed like she viewed herself as an integral part of it (and to be clear, I don't think she's wrong for feeling that way). However, I'd bet that the studio did not agree and felt like she was getting involved where she shouldn't be. They're used to authors selling them their project, maybe writing the script, and being otherwise completely uninvolved. I wouldn't be surprised if they made her feel unwelcome on set because of it.
As a fat darkskinned black woman, even the trailer had my eyes rolling to the back of my head. Wake me up when they make a black girl fantasy movie that isnât just a Target âBlack Girl Magicâ¨â t-shirt w the Afro silhouette come to life. Overly bored of ârandom famous black pplâ + magical racism + lightskinned leading lady = revolutionary black fantasy movieđ
tbh it doesnât surprise me that sheâs messy online bc the books were messy af. read them for the first time last year and i was fighting for my life to get through them.
I listened to the audiobook and I gotta say, while the setting was richly detailed and impressive, the plotline was overly generic and the pacing was all over the place. The enemies-to-lovers romances flipped like a switch. Like one moment the guy was literally about to murder the girl then suddenly theyâre in love.
I imagine she had an unfortunate wake up call when it comes to the book to movie adaptation. You hear a lot of authors who are promised larger say in how their books are to be brought to the big screen and it starts well enough until theyâre sidelined and their story is no longer theirâs. I mean, Stephen King is famously known to have hated Stanley Kubrickâs The Shining.
Thereâs a reason Stephen Chbosky refused to sell the rights to Perks of Being the Wallflower and took up directing and screen adaptation so he could eventually do it himself as a bit of a passion project 20 years later.
She wouldnât be the first author to hate a movie adaptation or feel (and possibly was) slighted, and she wonât be the last.
this booktok drama is... confusing (children of blood and bone)
