I think that Clark went to therapy fully expecting the therapist to be on his side
to tell him "Actually you're perfect just the way you are, it's everyone else that's wrong"
And that's why he's so unreceptive to Mary's saying until the end of the movie

@muegeedo4354 3 months ago

There are some theories that Clark is not just an alcoholic, but a violent one who is lying about the gravity of what he could have done. When Captain Clark appears in the dinner scene, the Still Life of his wife runs frantic into the corner and all the other Still Life react quite afraid of his presence. That also could be why when Clark was repeating the events of the night that his wife left him, he kept focusing on the glass breaking and waking her up, when in reality the glass was broken because he became violent and he's trying to cover it up and not face the actual horror of his actions.

13:18 I thought that at first too but after what happens later in the movie I realized he's the type of person to go to therapy hoping to be validated and absolved without actually confronting his behavior or trying to change.

Back then, sometimes the answer to DV situations was to attend court mandated therapy. Clark's violence is alluded to and his wife's still life acts like a DV victim when confronted with Captain Clark.

So the place Kat and her boyfriend live in is actually the 2400 Motel in Vancouver, BC. It was built in the 1940s and has managed to remain as it is because it's city-owned. It's been used for filming countless TV shows and movies (X-Files, Outer Limits, Bates Motel, Supernatural, etc.) because of its stylized, "fake" look which has managed to endure to this day.

I will admit the thought of the therapy being court mandated didnt cross my mind until you said it. Clark's deep resentment for Barbara along with his treatment of her Still Life and her reaction to scream and try to get away when Still Life Clark came back you cant tell me there wasnt a DV situation going on between them.

It’s not a perfect film but it was so impressively directed and the tension was so perfectly handled that I am more willing to overlook its flaws. It’s absolutely wild that this was based on a creepypasta and the director is in the same age range as i am and i’m a couple months older than he is

So, about Clark having a stable doorway.

The idea of a liminal space is one that seems like it should be inhabited but it isn't. A furniture store fits that perfectly. Room mockups made to look like bedrooms and home offices that no one actually uses. Except that Clark DOES live and work in his store. Which he tries to hide during the open hours. So there's a level of flipflopping or recursiveness to the liminality of his furniture store that may have resonated with the Backrooms' nature.

I think the MRI and AI connections are really interesting. Like an MRI, the Backrooms seem to scan your head to look inside. And like AI, it tries to create something off of what it scanned, getting closer and closer the more information its given, even if it seems like it's guessing at times.

Two girls whispered in the cinema
"I don't understand..."
"Which part?"
"Anything"
"Oh."

I think it’s really interesting nowadays where if a movie isn’t automatically 11/10 some ppl think it shouldn’t have existed. I gave backrooms a 7.5. Is it perfect? No. But I still recommend ppl to watch it. It’s odd how if it’s just ‘good’ and not ‘amazing’ then it’s a bad thing

36:58 “Phill thinks the back rooms are the most important thing in human history, even though he has no idea what they are, how to describe it, or what they could be for.” Pretty hard to refute the AI-referencing with that description lol

To quote Wendigoon’s backrooms video: Kane is the type of guy who would only speak in riddles if he could

@somethingmundanethen 3 months ago (edited)

Like, Mary makes it through, escapes the monster, and even manages character development in a movie about avoiding it, because she has been putting in the work that clark refused to, and she still gets stuck in the backrooms, because the nature of them is that you never really escape them. She had the strength of mind to not be caught up in the obsession and was actually going to leave and never come back, so it made sure she could never leave. Because the backrooms wants to be occupied with life, but it was simply not built for it. Love. Haunted house movie, where the house is the ghost 👻

I love how Curry Barker has tons of dif pics that people use when referring to him, but Kane just has that same non-descript yellowy backdrop and same “heh heh” smile pic being used for every reference to him 😂

This is a bit embarrassing to admit but Amanda got me comfortable with the idea of horror movies, this was the first ever actual horror movie I watched in general and in a dark theater non the less!

@somethingmundanethen 3 months ago (edited)

The true horror of Backrooms, as a movie, is that whatever it stands for, sometimes you wander in there of your own free will, and some you get dragged there by someone else. But either way, you're stuck.

@dragonetafireball 3 months ago

I think the most logical explanation for why Clark is in therapy as he’s doing it to either try and win back or spite his ex. He strikes me as the sort of guy who would try to “win therapy” and also look for the therapist to say something that he could use as a get out of jail free card or weaponise an arguments

I'm glad they focused on the "classic" backrooms. That was always the most interesting version to me. All the extra "levels" felt like they got too different and extra (really interesting on their own, but not fitting in with the "backstage of reality" vibe)
