Sleeping Beauty Woke Up 100 YEARS Later…And Everything Was Worse | Briar Explained PART ONE

Nerd School Dropout

Briar by Christopher Cantwell is a dark fantasy retelling of Sleeping Beauty where Briar Rose wakes up 100 years later to find her kingdom gone, her fairy tale twisted beyond recognition, and the world blaming her for something much bigger than she understands.

What starts as a familiar princess story turns into this brutal dark-fantasy adventure full of witches, cursed magic, necromancy, awful little gnomes, and one seriously shitty Prince Charming.

Reminder that in the original story the prince raped her when she was sleeping and she gave birth, and it was the baby that woke her up.

It's interesting how fast the world turned to shit. In many stories, it takes thousands of years for the world to become this decrepit. Only 100 years? It almost seems unrealistic until I think about how fast humans have ruined the world since the industrial revolution

There’s actually a darker part of sleeping beauty that most people forget. there is a version of the tail that is old that the prince married her and assaulted her while she was asleep. And she gave birth to the twins and one of her her twins wake her up mistaking her finger as something to get milk from which took the needle out of her body and woke her up, so there might be a potential that the marriage was more than we been told yet

Is Briar technically a zombie? She's emaciated and her hair's turned white with age. Also this panel 3:33 makes her look like Aurora from Beautiful Darkness

30:44 i never understand villains that destroy the world, because you got to live in the waste land you created.

Five hours ago?? Guess this means there's no part two to go to immediately...
Please make a part 2

Imagine being put to sleep for 100 years just because you poked your finger on something sharp, got married by someone against your will who did not even care enough about you to wake you up with a kiss, sleep through the deaths of everyone you have ever loved, get kissed by someone who robbed you, and then finally wake up to a living nightmare. 😭
I will totally be here for the volume 2.

I love Briar Rose the most. She's on a journey of self-discovery much later than she should be and I can relate :)))

*sigh* you have the most pleasant reading cadence. The moments you excitedly emphasize and then others that you deliver with hushed reverence are all an absolute delight to hear! You're not reading the comics, you're telling us a story.

I love when these brutal retellings of fairytales aren't just written to be brutal for the sake of brutality and even more when they actually tell a better story than the OG

In the Original Story called Sun, Moon and Thalia

Sleeping Beauty was raped by a King and impregnated with twins. The King’s beleaguered wife wanted Sleeping Beauty and the children dead. Sleeping Beauty is accidentally awakened by one of her children, the King executes his wife, and then gets to marry Sleeping Beauty.
