I've come to think of the Blackfyre Rebellions as really just an extension of the Blackwood/Bracken feud.  While we don't know all that much about what kicked it off, it always felt to me that Bittersteel nudged Daemon to rebellion.  He definitely seemed to consider himself the sole arbiter of who can lead the rebellions and wield Blackfyre rather than just move on to the next male descendant of Daemon in line.


When you realize he married Daemon's daughter, the whole thing falls into place with the idea the Blackfyres died out in the male line.  I know George has said he doesn't think Aegor had kids, but it works so well.  The you add in that Jon and Daenerys are Blackwood descendants through Egg's wife.

Although they aren't an acknowledged great house, the Golden Company has the best words.

It would've been so much better had brothers acted like brothers and stood by each other. Let Daeron handle diplomacy, and Daemon be the crown's enforcer and poster-boy. And later on, when both of them are respectively married, have their children marry each other, unifying the houses and claims.

Also he never decided to rebel. In 195-196 Daeron discovered the plots of lords to make Daemon king and how big the support had become. So he sent men to arrest him in an attempt to stop the rebellion from ever even happening. Which was thwarted by Fireball who wanted Daemon and helped him escape. Then Daemon decided to rebel since his brother ordered his arrest on nothing more than suspicion

My theory is that Daemon was actually Baelor I and Daena's bastard (could explain why he starved himself to death), and Aegon IV claimed Daemon as his once he found out. He was a terrible king and he knew if the word got out people would try to depose him. So he pushed the rebellion onto Daeron.

My theory is mostly based on that Daena never named anyone as father to Daemon, and it took 12 years after Daeron II took power for Daemon to rebel. I think Daemon somehow found out about his true parentage shortly before 196, but he knew claiming he was actually a bastard of two dead people, with a father who never claimed him, would not work. So he kept the story the same.

I think if people found out and believed it, they might have claimed Daemon was actually trueborn because Baelor I and Daena's marriage was annulled because they never slept together. The Faith might even get involved to posthumously undo that decision.

Daeron Vallued politics over the purity of his magic bloodline. Which he and his children thoroughly weakened by constantly marrying outwardly and to houses with literally no traces of Valyrian blood like house Velaryon. Ironically enough it was Aerion (the maddest of them all) that tried to maintain the magic of the Targaryen blood by marrying his cousin. But even that was too little too late. Daeron may have been too old to marry his sister, but he could have married her to Daemon to have at least one branch of the family be pure blooded. And that branch could provide marriages later on. Or even if he did marry Daenerys to the martels for peace, then he could have insisted Shiera actually pick a man to marry so get another potential bloodline from her and Brynden but no.
Daemon was the better choice between he and Daeron. But Daerons sons and especially his grandsons were the better choice over the boackfyres.
